We analyse 446 location decisions of R&D activities by multinational firms incorporated in the European Union over 1999-2006. Our results suggest that on average, the location probability of a representative R&D foreign affiliate increased with agglomeration economies from foreign R&D activities, human capital, proximity to centres of research excellence and the research and innovation capacity of the region. Further, our evidence suggests that in comparison to European multinational firms, the effects of patents intensity and proximity to centres of research excellence were stronger in the case of North American multinational firms. While government R&D expenditure intensity increased the probability of location of R&D activities by European multinational firms in the region, it did not have a significant effect on the probability of location of R&D activities by North American multinational firms.JEL classification: F23; O32; R38

We analyze the channels through which institutional quality can impact the corruption–growth nexus. To do this, we develop an endogenous growth model and test its implications empirically, through panel data models using GMM and PSTR settings. Our sample consists of 136 developed and developing countries analyzed over the period 1984–2015. We show, both theoretically and empirically, that (i) the corruption–growth relation can be subject to nonlinearities highly influenced by countries’ institutional development; and (ii) private investment and public spending are two main channels through which institutional quality affects, positively or negatively, the relation between corruption and economic growth.

This paper examines the impact of exports and its main determinants on the financial performance of the Romanian wine industry. We draw on a dataset consisting of mixed firm-level (i.e., 207 companies) data, Google Trends data, and regional variables covering the period from 2009 to 2017. We show that Romanian wine exports, at the firm level, are positively affected by regional wine yields (especially in the case of red wine varieties), temperature, and firm agglomeration, and negatively impacted by firm size. We also find a close positive correlation between financial performance and exports. (JEL Classifications: F61, L66, C23)

This paper aims at building a money demand function that takes account of the heterogeneities of the Central and Eastern European Countries (CEECs) in the context of the European integration. We extend the traditional specification of money demand to capture the effects of a change in agents' expectations regarding the dynamics of economic activity. The traditional determinants of the demand for money (real GDP, interest rate, inflation rate) are found to be significant and have the expected sign. Above this, we also find that the role of economic sentiments-captured through the European sentiment indicator (ESI)-is significant in explaining the money demand: consumers' and investors' gloomy expectations concerning future economic developments trigger an increase in the domestic money demand, due to precautionary reasons. Our results also suggest that a currency substitution effect, against both euro and USD, is present in the CEECs.
