Die nach bekannten Verfahren erhältlichen Diacetylmethanide (I) werden durch Ozon in die Triketone (II) und DMSO ( ‐ Weiteroxidation zu Dimethylsulfon) gespalten.
Dimethylsulfoxid (I) bildet mit Sulfopropansäureanhydrid (II) das Betain (III), das mit aktiven Methylenverbindungen (IV) Sulfurane (V) und 3‐Sulfopropansäure (VI) ergibt.
