The results of a combined experimental program and numerical modeling program to evaluate the behavior of ungrouted hollow concrete blocks prisms under uniaxial compression are addressed. In the numerical program, three distinct approaches have been considered using a continuum model with a smeared approach, namely plane-stress, plane-strain and threedimensional conditions. The response of the numerical simulations is compared with experimental data of masonry prisms using concrete blocks specifically designed for this purpose. The elastic and inelastic parameters were acquired from laboratory tests on concrete and mortar samples that constitute the blocks and the bed joint of the prisms. The results from the numerical simulations are discussed with respect to the ability to reproduce the global response of the experimental tests, and with respect to the failure behavior obtained. Good agreement between experimental and numerical results was found for the peak load and for the failure mode using the three-dimensional model, on four different sets of block/mortar types. Less good agreement was found for plain stress and plain strain models.
Mechanical Characterization of Vibro-dry Concrete Blocks ABSTRACTThe aim of this work is to determine the physical and mechanical behavior of vibro-dry concrete for structural purposes. Tests have been made to determine the net area, water absorption, density, axial compression, elasticity modulus, Poisson ratio, failure mode under compression, tenacity under tensile and compression strain. After a sequence of tests made in the laboratory, it was possible to understand the mechanical properties of vibro-dry concrete block for developing new components for structural purpose. Furthermore, the results of a combined experimental program and numerical modeling to evaluate the linear and non-linear behavior of vibro-dry concrete block were done. For compression and tensile strain, it can be concluded from this work that there was an increasing on the dispersion values due to propagation of the failure. The average coefficient variation of Poisson's ratio was around 60% and for the elasticity modulus
This paper presents the use of numerical model techniques for identification and damage location adopting the Modal Curvature Difference (MCD) method as reference for the analysis of a simply supported concrete structure. Then, an empirical formulation to detect damages in this structure is proposed. In this method, called Acceleration Summation Difference (ASD), the difference of acceleration amplitude between intact and damaged structures are calculated for concrete plates simply supported on rubber bearings. During the analyses, the finite element models were developed using SAP2000® software. The results obtained depicted that it is possible to determine the approximate position of one or more damages in the structure, with some restrictions, and the proposed ASD method presented good correlation to localize the position of single or multiple damages.
