The aim of this work is to critically assess the mechanical properties of hollow concrete masonry using experimental results from prisms constructed with blocks of two different strengths and four types of mortar. A key conclusion is that mortar is mostly responsible for the non-linear behavior of masonry. Moreover, a strongly non-linear relationship between masonry elasticity modulus and compressive strength is found, which contradicts the simple linear relation proposed by Eurocode 6 [CEN. Eurocode 6: Design of masonry structures -Part 1 -Common rules for reinforced and unreinforced masonry structures. EN-1996-1-1;. The porosity of mortar and the state of stress that mortar undergoes in the process of compressive loading can be responsible for changes in the mechanical properties, such as elasticity modulus and Poisson's ratio. Finally, different types of mortars induce different failure modes in the masonry prisms and there is clear evidence that the failure of hollow concrete masonry starts after onset of mortar crushing. In order to better reproduce the observed experimental behavior, a tentative model for the mortar Poisson's ratio variation upon loading is also presented.
Mechanical behaviour of bedding mortar for structural masonrypreview and failure mode ABSTRACTThis paper presents the mechanical behaviour of hardening mortars for structural masonry, regarding compressive strength, flexural strength and elasticity modulus under uniaxial and triaxial stress state. One has used casting cubic, prism and cylindrical specimens. The conclusions drawn from the present studies are: there is a potential relation between compressive strength of cube, cylinders and flexural strength with water/cement ratio; there is a linear relation between elasticity modulus and compressive strength of mortar; the ultimate strength envelope can be represented by a linear function; It is possible to observe the macropores with dispersed cracks in the transition zone between paste and grain, the cracks seems to be induced by shrinkage and weeping; mortars exhibits high porosity and different sizes of voids, with a possible initial decrease in volume by closing of the flaw and voids; the constitutive model to represent the non-linear elasticity of mortar was proposed.
Brazilian Codes NBR 6118 and NBR 15575 provide practical values for interstory drift limits applied to conventional modeling in order to prevent negative effects in masonry infill walls caused by excessive lateral deformability, however these codes do not account for infill walls in the structural model. The inclusion of infill walls in the proposed model allows for a quantitative evaluation of structural stresses in these walls and an assessment of cracking in these elements (sliding shear diagonal tension and diagonal compression cracking). This paper presents the results of simulations of single-story one-bay infilled R/C frames. The main objective is to show how to check the serviceability limit states under lateral loads when the infill walls are included in the modeling. The results of numerical simulations allowed for an evaluation of stresses and the probable cracking pattern in infill walls. The results also allowed an identification of some advantages and limitations of the NBR 6118 practical procedure based on interstory drift limits.
