Synopsis Hvorslev's equation for the shear strength of clay is shown to define a surface in a space of three variables σ′, e and τ. The progressive yielding of a sample defines a loading path in this space, and the paths taken by samples in differing tests can be correlated if a boundary energy correction is applied. The final portions of all paths then lie in a unique surface, and the paths end at a unique critical voids ratio line. At the critical voids ratio state unlimited deformation can take place while σ′, e and τ remain constant. The two concepts of the existence of such a surface and such a critical voids ratio line are verified by an analysis of results of triaxial tests on a clay. Similar tests on silt and sand also confirm the concepts, although some inaccuracy is inherent in these tests. Finally results of tests on granular media in a simple shear apparatus are presented which confirm closely the applicability of both concepts to the yielding of granular media.
Experimental evidence is produced to show that it is reasonable to assign a unique strength to all soils when at their respective liquid limits, and to redefine the plastic limit as the water content at which the strength is 100 times that at the liquid limit. Combining these assumptions with ideas of critical state soil mechanics it is then possible to relate the compression index of the remoulded soil to its plasticity index, and to suggest a unique relation between remoulded strength and liquidity index, irrespective of actual values of liquid and plastic limits. Field data from the Gulf of Mexico and from the North Sea are presented in support of these relations. The predictions of strength are best for overconsolidated clays, having water contents near the plastic limit.Recently in the United Kingdom the cone penetrometer has become the recommended test for determination of the liquid limit, in preference to the Casagrande test. Having redefined the plastic limit it would be logical to use the cone penetrometer to determine this too, by using cones with different weights. Experimental data are shown to illustrate and support this proposal.
The purposes of in situ testing are set out, and the difficulties of the interpretation of the observations are emphasized. These difficulties are due to the complex behaviour of soils together with the lack of control and of choice of the boundary conditions in any field test. One notable exception is the pressuremeter test, from which soil properties can be derived directly without recourse to empirical correlations. The discussion is concentrated on the measurement of undrained shear strength. The results obtained from different tests (triaxial, plane strain, direct simple shear, pressuremeter and vane) are compared by expressing them in terms of the undrained strength ratio su/σv0′ as a function of the friction angle φ. Special attention is paid to tests in which the principal axes of stress and of strain increment are free to rotate. In such tests, uncertainty exists regarding the definition of failure and the planes of maximum stress obliquity. To derive these functions Matsuoka's failure criterion is used. As a consequence a theoretical hierarchy of strengths is established which agrees qualitatively with experimental evidence. The importance to a designer of this variety of strengths is emphasized. A study is made of the piezocone and the interpretation of the pore pressures in terms of the overconsolidation ratio of the clay tested. A plea is made for the standardization of the equipment, the operation and the interpretation of in situ tests to obtain maximum benefit from them.
A method of analysis is presented which permits the settlement of a pile group under vertical load to be calculated with reasonable accuracy, without the expense of a full rigorous analysis. The method is based on the superposition of individual pile displacement fields, considering the average behaviour down the pile shafts separately from that beneath the level of the pile bases. The displacement fields are determined by means of a recently developed, approximate, closed form solution for the problem of a singlez vertically loaded pile. The analysis may be applied to any general pile group, the only restriction being that all the piles must be embedded to the same depth. The soil is modelled as an elastic material characterized by a shear modulus which is assumed to vary linearly with depth, and a Poisson's ratio, assumed constant. The paper outlines the analysis and compares calculated load-settlement ratios for groups of up to nine piles with those from more rigorous numerical methods of analysis. Three field loading tests on pile groups are studied and it is shown that the settlements at working loadsmay be predicted with good accuracy using soil parameters back analysed from the results of single piles load tested on each particular site.
This paper describes the results of numerical analysis of the effects of installing a driven pile. The geometry of the problem has been simplified by the assumption of plane strain conditions in addition to axial symmetry. Pile installation has been modelled as the undrained expansion of a cylindrical cavity. The excess pore pressures generated in this process have subsequently been assumed to dissipate by means of outward radial flow of pore water. The consolidation of the soil has been studied using a work-hardening elasto–plastic soil model which has the unique feature of allowing the strength of the soil to change as the water content changes. Thus it is possible to calculate the new intrinsic soil strength at any stage during consolidation. In particular the long-term shaft capacity of a driven pile may be estimated from the final effective stress state and intrinsic strength of the soil adjacent to the pile. A parametric study has been made of the effect of the past consolidation history of the soil on the stress changes due to installation of the pile. The results indicate that for anyinitial value of overconsolidation ratio, the final stress state adjacent to the pile is similar to that in a normally one-dimensionally consolidated soil except that the radial stress is the major principal stress. A method is described whereby the model of pile installation and subsequent consolidation may be extended to clays which are sensitive. The method is used to predict changes in the strength and water content of soil adjacent to a driven pile which compare well with measurementsfrom two field tests on driven piles. It is also shown that the rate of increase of bearing capacity of a driven pile may be estimated with reasonable accuracy from the rate of increase in shear strength of the soil predicted from the analysis.
