Synopsis Hvorslev's equation for the shear strength of clay is shown to define a surface in a space of three variables σ′, e and τ. The progressive yielding of a sample defines a loading path in this space, and the paths taken by samples in differing tests can be correlated if a boundary energy correction is applied. The final portions of all paths then lie in a unique surface, and the paths end at a unique critical voids ratio line. At the critical voids ratio state unlimited deformation can take place while σ′, e and τ remain constant. The two concepts of the existence of such a surface and such a critical voids ratio line are verified by an analysis of results of triaxial tests on a clay. Similar tests on silt and sand also confirm the concepts, although some inaccuracy is inherent in these tests. Finally results of tests on granular media in a simple shear apparatus are presented which confirm closely the applicability of both concepts to the yielding of granular media.
Synopsis The aims, during the past 20 years, of the Cambridge research programme in soil mechanics are outlined. The principal objective is to develop an understanding of the stress–strain behaviour of soils so that reliable predictions can be made concerning their load-deformation characteristics at all working loads, rather than only loads at failure, in practical problems. A superstructure and its foundation can then be designed as a unit. The pressing need for the study of the load-deformation behaviour of soils in mixed boundary value problems at model scale is emphasized. New versatile shear test equipment which can impose a wide range of stress and/or strain paths, together with non-destructive methods of checking the uniformity of the behaviour of specimens, are briefly described. Typical data are presented for one problem, illustrating the variation of the passive pressure on a retaining wall with the displacement of that wall into sand. A revised statement of the Mohr-Coulomb failure criterion is proposed which takes account of the observed evidence that rupture surfaces coincide with zero-extension lines. The relationships of stress with velocity characteristics are discussed and it is indicated how they might be used to determine the load-deflexion behaviour of any structure on or in the soil, even when the soil is not initially uniform. The immediate practical importance of centrifugal model tests is shown briefly.
Synopsis The consequences of the assumption that soil is an isotropic, elasto-plastic, continuous medium are examined. A new energy equation is proposed, well supported by experimental evidence, from which a stress-strain relationship is developed for virgin and lightly overconsolidated clays. An alternative stress-strain relationship is derived from the “normality condition” specified in the theory of plasticity, and this is shown to be identical to that proposed by Roscoe and Poorooshasb (1963). These two relationships are then combined to give, in terms of only four fundamental soil constants, a unique stress-strain relationship, simple equations for a new state boundary surface and a unique yield locus or plastic potential. The shape of these surfaces necessitates a complete revision of currently accepted pictures of the mechanism of virgin consolidation and entails the possibility of the occurrence of shear distortion under isotropic stress. The concept is supported by experimental evidence obtained from creep tests. Finally it is suggested that if the theory is accepted then soil testing procedures may be greatly simplified, and that new methods may be applied to solve earth pressure problems.
Synopsis A stress-strain theory is developed for normally consolidated clays when subjected to triaxial compression tests. The theory can only be applied for the prediction of strains where the moisture content is a unique function of the imposed stresses. This condition is discussed. It is then shown that the incremental strain associated with a given stress increment can be considered as the sum of two components that occur in (i) a constant volume process and (ii) a process in which the stress ratio remains constant. The relevant strain characteristics of the clay are therefore determined from undrained and anisotropic consolidation tests alone; from these the strains that occur in any type of partially or fully drained test can be predicted. Predicted and experimental values are compared for tests on samples of Kaolin. Evidence is given to show that for tests with geometrically similar stress paths, the change in moisture content, the volumetric strain and the axial strain are identical. Finally the application of the concept of a plastic potential to normally consolidated clays is briefly considered.
