Bras. 34(2):173-178, fevereiro 2014 173 RESUMO.-Foi realizada falha segmentar com 6mm de diâ-metro na região metafisária medial de tíbias de 12 coelhos, onde foi implantado uma associação de micro e macrofragmentos de matriz óssea cortical heteróloga fragmentada conservada em glicerina (98%) e polimetilmetacrilato autoclavados, para a sua reconstrução, e avaliados radiológi-ca e macroscopicamente aos 30, 60, 90 e 120 dias. Houve adesão, em relação ao tempo, dos micro e macrocompósi-tos ao leito receptor, em 100% dos casos, mostrando ser biologicamente biocompatível, pois promoveram a reparação de falhas ósseas, sem sinais de infecção, migração e/ou rejeição, podendo, dessa forma, ser mais uma opção como substituto para preencher grandes defeitos ósseos.
Rabbits are widely used in studies focusing on pain. However, pain is undertreated in this species and one possible factor to explain this is the lack of evaluation methods. The objective of this study was to identify behaviours related to orthopaedic pain in rabbits and to evaluate the influence of the presence of an observer on these behaviours. Twenty-eight rabbits undergoing orthopaedic surgery and filmed 24 hours before surgery, and 1 hour (before rescue analgesia), 4 hours (3 hours after rescue analgesia), and 24 hours post-recovery were observed in the presence and absence of an observer. The frequency and/or duration of behaviours were compared over time and between the presence and absence of the observer using the Friedman and Wilcoxon tests respectively. Data are expressed as median and interquartile range and a significant difference was considered when p<0.05. At 1 hour post-recovery, the rabbits showed reduced activity, hopping, change posture, position in the cage, explore, and open eyes in both the presence and absence of the observer. In the absence of the observer, quadrupedal posture, interact with pinecone, and eat carrot also decreased, while wince behaviour increased. In the presence of the observer, before surgery, the rabbits were less active (Presence-280; 162–300, Absence-300; 300–300) and presented a lower duration of explore (Presence-3; 0–32, Absence-40; 4–63). Post-recovery the rabbits flinched less (Presence-0; 0–0, Absence-0; 0–1) and suspended the affected limb less (Presence-0; 0–0, Absence-0; 0–65). After rescue analgesia the rabbits put weight on and raised the affected limb less (Presence-0; 0–0, Absence-0; 0–2) and licked the affected area less (Presence-0; 0–0, Absence-0; 0–2). These findings demonstrate that the presence of the observer inhibited pain-free behaviours in the rabbits, leading to a false impression of pain, and after the surgery the rabbits masked some pain signs related to the affected area.
PURPOSE: To evaluate hemodynamics and bispectral index (BIS) in bitches anesthetized with ketamine and midazolam in combination with dexmedetomidine or medetomidine and submitted to ovariohysterectomy. METHODS: Twenty bitches pretreated with levomedetomidine and buprenorphine were anesthetized with 5 mg.kg-1 ketamine and 0.2 mg.kg-1 midazolam i.v. Continuous infusion of 0.4 mg.kg-1.h-1 midazolam and 20 mg.kg-1.h-1 ketamine was initiated in combination with DEX (n=10): 20 µg.kg-1.h-1 dexmedetomidine or MED (n=10): 30 µg.kg-1.h-1 medetomidine over 30 minutes. A pharmacokinetic study provided dexmedetomidine plasma concentration, set to be 3.0 ng.mL-1. RESULTS: BIS decreased in both groups (P<0.05), but it was lower in DEX (P<0.05) as compared to MED. No differences were found in hemodynamic parameters (heart rate, systolic, diastolic and mean arterial pressure) between groups (P>0.05), but heart rate decreased in both groups, as compared to control values (P<0.05). Respiratory rate decreased (P<0.05) and expired end tidal CO2 increased progressively (P<0.05) and similarly in both groups. Anesthetic recovery period was similar between groups (P<0.05) with no adverse effects. CONCLUSION: Continuous administration of dexmedetomidine with calculated plasma concentration equal to 3 ng.mL-1 in combination with midazolam and ketamine provides suitable anesthesia for spay surgery in bitches, hemodynamic stability and calm awakening with no adverse effects.
Objective The aim of this study was to compare in vitro accuracy of femoral measurements obtained from different radiographical positions with actual femoral anatomical dimensions in dogs.
Materials and Methods Craniocaudal projections of the femur in ventrodorsal position, standard craniocaudal radiographical (SR) and craniocaudal radiography with horizontal radiographical beam (HR), in addition to anatomical macroscopic measurements (A), were obtained from 45 femurs from 23 canine cadavers, for calculation of the canal flare index (CFI). The differences between the radiographical positions and 95% limits of agreement (LOA) between the CFI-SR, CFI-HR and CFI-A were evaluated by the Bland–Altman method.
Results The standard craniocaudal radiograph provided an approximate dimension of the proximal femoral morphology (mean difference: 0.121 ± 0.391) with a different CFI value (p = 0.0341) from CFI-A. The craniocaudal radiograph taken using a horizontal beam provided greater accuracy (mean difference: 0.087 ± 0.42) in our study.
Clinical Significance The craniocaudal projection using a horizontal radiographical beam was more accurate than the standard craniocaudal projection for measurement of the true anatomical dimensions of the canine femur, minimizing the influence of the technique on the CFI values.
A citologia conjuntival é um importante método diagnóstico, podendo ser facilmente realizada pelo clínico veterinário. O presente trabalho teve como objetivo o estudo da viabilidade do exame citológico da mucosa conjuntival pelo método de impressão em papel-filtro, assim como estabelecer o padrão normal nos felinos domésticos. Realizou-se o exame citológico da mucosa conjuntival pelo método de impressão em papel-filtro de 30animais da espécie felina, sem utilização da anestesia tópica. As técnicas de colorações utilizadas foram o Giemsa e o Shorr. O padrão normal foi caracterizado por predominância da disposição em agrupamentos celulares e células das camadas intermediárias e superficiais. A técnica de colheita de material mostrou-se prática, rápida e proporcionou a obtenção de um material de boa qualidade. O método de impressão utilizado não se mostrou traumático à conjuntiva, amenizando a dificuldade encontrada na manipulação dos animais da espécie felina, caracterizando-se como um importante exame complementar no diagnóstico e direcionamento terapêutico de afecções oculares externas.
The objective was to evaluate the parthenogenetic activation of domestic cat oocytes. Cumulus-oocyte complexes matured for 36 h were subjected to three protocols of parthenogenetic activation: Group 1 - ionomycin + cycloheximide; Group 2 - ionomycin + roscovitine; and Group 3 - ionomycin + strontium. As a control, a fourth group of oocytes were cultured in the absence of any activation agent. In all groups, embryos were cultured in SOFaa for 72 h after activation and evaluated for activation rate, cleavage, and embryonic development using Hoechst33342. There were no significant differences among the three treated groups for rates of activated oocytes (70.1 +/- 4.3, 75.5 +/- 4.7, and 61.9 +/- 7.2%, for Treatments 1, 2, and 3 respectively; mean +/- SEM), or cleavage (48.1 +/- 5.9, 47.4 +/- 3.8, and 33.3 +/- 6.8%). However, activation and cleavage rates were higher (P < 0.05) than those in the control group (35.5 +/- 6.4 and 11.8 +/- 4.0%). There were no significant differences among treatment groups for proportion of embryos with 2-10 cells, 10-16 cells, and morulas. In the Control group, the embryo production rate was lower (P < 0.05), although the activation rate was high. The authors concluded that all three treatments effectively induced parthenogenetic activation of domestic cat oocytes. However, to optimize the use of strontium and roscovitine, a dose response and the effect of the presence of Ca(++) in the medium requires further study.
