The kinetics of the crystallization of thermoresponsive poly(2-isopropyl-2-oxazoline) in water and the time-dependent evolution of the morphology were examined using wide-angle X-ray scattering and conventional and cryogenic scanning electron microscopy. Results indicate that a temperature-induced phase separation produces a bicontinuous polymer network-like structure, which with the onset of crystallization collapses into individual particles (1-2 mm in diameter) composed of a porous fiber mesh. Nanofibers then preferentially form at the particle surface, thus wrapping the microspheres like a ball of wool. The particle morphology is severely affected by changes in temperature and less by the initial polymer concentration.

The activity of alpha-tocopherol, Trolox, propyl gallate, gallic acid, methyl carnosoate, and carnosic acid was studied in two oil-in-water (o/w) emulsions, in two water-in-oil (w/o) emulsions, and in bulk oil with and without added emulsifiers. All antioxidants had either moderate or higher activity in bulk oil than in the emulsions. In most emulsions, the most polar antioxidants, propyl gallate and gallic acid, exhibited either prooxidant activity or no antioxidant activity. Methyl carnosoate was the most active antioxidant in w/o emulsions but was less active than Trolox in o/w emulsions. alpha-Tocopherol was less active in bulk oil than in emulsions, but its activity in bulk oil was markedly enhanced by the addition of o/w emulsifiers. Partitioning of antioxidants, hydrogen bonding, interphase transport, surface accessibility, and interaction of emulsifier with antioxidants are considered to be important parameters that determine antioxidant activity in lipid-containing systems.

The current paper shows that poly(ethylene imine) (PEI) is an efficient template for the fabrication of spherical calcium phosphate (CaP)/polymer hybrid particles at pH values above 8. The polymer forms spherical entities, which contain one or a few CaP particles with diameters of ca. 6 nm. The samples contain up to 20 wt % polymer, which appears to be wrapped around the small CaP particles. The particles form via a mineralization-trapping pathway, where at the beginning of the precipitation small CaP particles form. Further particle growth is then prevented by precipitation of the PEI onto these particles at pH values of ca. 8. Stabilization of the particles is provided by the re-protonation of the PEI, which is adsorbed on the CaP particles, during the remainder of the mineralization process. At low pH, much larger particles form. They most likely grow via heterogeneous nucleation and growth on existing, polymermodified CaP surfaces.
