These miRNAs are potential biomarkers of muscle damage or adaptation to exercise.

The validity of rating of perceived exertion (RPE) in predicting lactate threshold during an incremental test was analyzed in 15 men with type 2 diabetes (M age = 53.4 yr., SD = 12.9). Blood glucose, lactate, and minute ventilation (VE)/VO2 responses identified the lactate, ventilatory, and glucose thresholds. Workloads (W) corresponding to RPEs 12, 13, 14, and 15 were determined. Second-order polynomials fit to VE/W and [lac]/W ratios corresponding to RPEs of 9-10, 12-13, and 16-17 also identified workloads above which there was an overproportional increase in VE and [lac]. These workload breakpoints did not differ, although at RPE 12 underestimated and at RPE 15 overestimated lactate threshold. RPE 13 and 14 and the responses of VE/W and [lac]/W to submaximal exercise accurately predicted lactate threshold.

Relation of neck circumference and relative muscle strength and cardiovascular risk factors in sedentary womenRelação da circunferência do pescoço com a força muscular relativa e os fatores de risco cardiovascular em mulheres sedentárias ). Based on the neck circumference, the sample was divided into two groups: Group Circumference <35cm (n=27) and Group Circumference ≥35cm (n=33) to compare relative muscle strength and cardiovascular risk factors. The correlation between variables was tested by Pearson and Spearman correlations, with a significance level established at p<0.05. Results: The findings revealed that women with neck circumference ≥35cm presented higher values of body mass, waist circumference, body adiposity index, body mass index, systolic blood pressure, blood glucose, glycated hemoglobin and volume of visceral fat when compared with the group with neck circumference <35cm. Additionally, the group with larger neck circumference presented lower values of relative strength. Conclusion: Neck circumference seems to be an important predictive factor of cardiovascular risk and of relative strength loss in middleaged sedentary women.

In physically active elderly women, VJ evaluation using a contact mat is a reliable method and could be used to estimate jump height. Additionally, the results of this study could serve as reference values in similar samples evaluated with the same procedures.

OBJETIVO: Analisar a possibilidade de se determinar a velocidade de lactato mínimo (LM) em corredores adolescentes utilizando-se apenas três estágios incrementais. MÉTODOS: Onze indivíduos (13,7 ± 1,0 anos; 47,3 ± 12,1kg; 160,0 ± 1,0cm; 18,3 ± 1,8kg/m²) realizaram três testes de corrida em pista de atletismo em dias distintos: 1) desempenho de 3.000m (Vm3.000); 2) teste de LM que consistiu de um sprint de 500m para indução a hiperlactatemia, seguido de 10min de recuperação e seis séries de 800m em intensidades de 83, 86, 89, 92, 95 e 98% da Vm3.000; 3) teste de LM com três estágios (LMp3) semelhante ao protocolo anterior, porém, com três séries de 800m em intensidades de 83, 89 e 98% da Vm3.000. Durante o primeiro minuto de recuperação entre os estágios dos testes dois e três foram coletadas amostras de sangue para dosagem de lactato sanguíneo. Para determinação do LM foram empregadas: a) inspeção visual (LM) e b) função polinomial de segunda ordem para identificar o LM em seis estágios (LMp) e três estágios (LMp3). RESULTADOS: ANOVA demonstrou não haver diferenças entre as velocidades de lactato mínimo (m.min-1) identificadas pelos diferentes métodos (LM = 221,7 ± 15,4 vs. LMp = 227,1 ± 10,8 vs. LMp3 = 224,1 ± 11,2;). Altas correlações foram observadas entre os protocolos estudados e destes com a Vm3.000 (p < 0,01). CONCLUSÃO: Foi possível identificar a velocidade de corrida correspondente ao LM em adolescentes mesmo utilizando-se de apenas três estágios incrementais (LMp3).

Resumo -Os objetivos foram verificar a validade do lactato mínimo (LM) modelo rampa em determinar a intensidade de LM (ILM), bem como estimar uma intensidade de exercício correspondente ao máximo estado estável de lactato (IMEEL). Ainda, a possibilidade de identificar parâmetros de aptidão aeróbia e anaeróbia em um único teste de LM em ciclistas recreacionais. Participaram do estudo 14 ciclistas de nível regional, do sexo masculino, submetidos ao protocolo de LM em cicloergômetro (Excalibur-Lode), composto por um teste incremental com carga inicial de 75 watts e incrementos de 1 Watt a cada 6 segundos. A indução prévia de hiperlactatemia foi realizada através do teste anaeróbio de Wingate (TAW) (Monark-834E), com carga de 8,57% da massa corporal. Foram obtidos a potência pico (11,5±2,0 Watts/kg), potência média (9,8±1,7 Watts/kg), índice de fadiga (33,7±7 %) e lactatemia 7min após o TAW (10,5±2,3 mmol.L -1 ). O teste incremental identificou a ILM (209,1±23,2 Watts), e respectivas concentração de lactato (2,9±0,7 mmol.L -1 ), frequência cardíaca (153,6±10,6 bpm), e também a potência máxima (305,2±31 Watts). A IMEEL foi determinada a partir de 2 a 4 séries de 30 min em intensidade constante (207,8±17,7 Watts), não diferindo da ILM, apresentando boa concordância entre si. O teste LM em protocolo de rampa parece valido em identificar a ILM e estimar a intensidade do MEEL de ciclistas regionais. Ainda, parâmetros de aptidão anaeróbia e aeróbia também foram identificados durante uma única sessão. Palavras-chave: Avaliação; Aptidão física; Lactato. The maximal lactate steady state is the gold standard for evaluating aerobic capacity; however, it is time-consuming. The lactate minimum protocol is an easier alternative, but is not feasible and still expensive. This study investigated whether the rating of perceived exertion of 13 is an accurate predictor of lactate minimum and maximal lactate steady state intensities. Eleven physically active men performed three tests: (1) incremental exercise with workloads based on rating of perceived exertion of 10, 13, and 16 (experimental protocol - denominated RPE-13 test), (2) lactate minimum, and (3) maximal lactate steady state. No differences were observed among participants' workloads corresponding to rating of perceived exertion 13, lactate minimum, and maximal lactate steady state intensities. Thus, the workload associated with the rating of perceived exertion of 13 was equivalent to the other two protocols investigated.

Cognitive impairment in the elderly living in long-term care facilities was more pronounced and frequent in obese individuals. This study also demonstrated that better functional capacity reflects better cognitive performance.
