This study aims to compare personal relationships satisfaction and subjective well-being of Brazilian and Spanish children and to verify if personal relationships are associated with subjective well-being for the sample. Participants are 6,747 children aged from 11 to 14 years old (M = 12.07, DP = 0.731), 1,020 being Brazilian and the others Spanish. From the total sample 50.7% were girls. Results pointed that the items of personal relationships are grouped into three components related to family, school and friends. Spanish children had higher means than Brazilians' in the items of personal relationships and in the subjective well-being scale. There is a significant association between personal relationships and subjective well-being, and the relationships with family, school and friends are predictors of children well-being in both countries. Family relationships are those with the highest contribution to the prediction of child well-being for both countries, followed by relationships at school and with friends. Personal relationships can be considered a predictor of child well-being with approximately 40% of explained variance for both countries.
This study aims associating children's satisfaction to their interpersonal relationships within their main contexts of interaction (family, friends and school) and their satisfaction regarding their subjective well-being, considering the variables age, gender, type of school (public or private) and city of living (capital or not). There were 2.280 children from 9 to 13 years old (M = 10,99; SD = 0,996), being 1.341 from the capital city (58,8%), most of them from public schools (61%) and 55,5% of the amount were girls. The results showed there is no difference between the average satisfaction data and the interpersonal relationships by age and that children living in country towns are more satisfied with their interpersonal relationships. Children who study in private schools are more satisfied with their family relationships and school environment, while students from public schools are more satisfied with their friendships; besides girls are more satisfied with both their school relationships and friends. The subjective well-being decreased as they become older and boys showed an average subjective well-being significantly higher than girls. Considering the interactions among subjective well-being and the variables evaluated, the children who presented higher average of subjective well-being are those who live in country towns and study in public schools and the ones who live in the capital and study at in private schools.
ABSTRACT -Psychometric properties of the Multidimensional Self-Concept Scale in Brazilian adolescentsConsidering the importance of self-concept in the well-being of adolescents, as well as the need for reliable scales that allow its evaluation, the objectives of the present study are to verify the psychometric properties of the Multidimensional Self-Concept Scale-its structure and internal consistency -in a sample of Brazilian adolescents, and to assess the scalar invariance of the scale considering the adolescents' gender. The study included 1,588 adolescents between 12 and 16 years of age, with 65.5% being female. The results indicate that the four-dimensional (academic, family, social and physical), 20-item version of the Multidimensional Self-Concept Scale presents appropriate reliability and fit indices when performing confirmatory factor analysis for the sample. There is also factorial invariance between boys and girls tested with multi-group confirmatory factor analysis. Keywords: self-concept; self-esteem; adolescents. Psychometric studies of the Eudemon Scale of Personal Well-being in adolescents AbstractThis study aims to evaluate the psychometric properties of the Eudemon Scale of Personal Well-being (EBP) in Brazilian adolescents. The participants were 1479 adolescents (64.7% girls) between 12 and 16 years old (M=14,12, SD=1,26). Participants answered the EBP and other instruments of well-being. The Exploratory Factor Analysis (n=712) indicated the presence of two factors and the internal consistency of the scale was adequate (α=0,767). The Confirmatory Factor Analysis (n=767) showed good fit indices of the scale with 21 items. Multigroup analyses indicated that the factor structure of the scale and the factor loadings of the items are similar for boys and girls. Significant correlations of the EBP were found with other scales that assess well-being through concurrent validation (Pearson correlations). It is possible to conclude that the instrument showed evidence of validity and it can be used with Brazilian adolescents. Keywords: eudemon scale of personal well-being; psychometrics; statistical validity; adolescence.
