SymposiumThomas Luckmann (I) und Bernd Giesen (II) über NIKLÄS LUHMANN, Gesellschaftsstruktur und Semantik* I.Es ist schon lange her, daß die Wissenssoziologie, dieser Bastard von Philosophie und Soziologie, von jenen totgewünscht wurde, welchen dieses anstrengende, an alte Sünden erinnernde Kind lästig war. In den ersten Jahren seines Lebens schien das Kind dennoch zu gedeihen. Dürkheim, Mauss, Hubert, Meillet, auch Sommerfeit und andere schlugen -hauptsächlich am Beispiel von segmentären Gesellschaften -eindrucksvoll einfache -wie man später zu vermuten begann, zu einfache -Theorien über das Verhältnis von Gesellschaftsstruktur, Kommunikation, Sprache, Wissen, Moral und Religion vor .Max Webers religions-und kultursoziologische Untersuchungen boten sich dagegen als Paradigma einer historischen Wissenssoziologie an. Auch Schelers Interesse galt nicht nur einer (mehr oder minder) soziologischen Erkenntniskritik, sondern auch einer materialen Wissenssoziologie, in welcher schon früh die Grundfragen der Wissensverteilung angesprochen wurden. Von Seiten des historischen Materialismus glaubte man, mit der Sichel des Marxschen Ideologie-Begriffs den gordischen Knoten zerschnitten zu haben, welchen die idealistischen Versuche einer transzendentalen Begründung der Gesellschaftstheorie offenbar nicht aufzuknüpfen vermocht hatten. Und außerdem hatte man den Hammer der Basis/Überbau-Schematismen in der anderen Hand.Es deuteten sich Schwierigkeiten an: historisch-systematische Analysen der Wissensverteilung konnten ohne adäquatere Gesellschaftstypologien, ohne detaillierte Analysen der Wissensverteilungsprozesse in komplexen Gesellschaften nicht viel weitergebracht werden. Die Durkheimschen Theorieansätze, obwohl mit einigem Erfolg an komplexen Zivilisationen (von Granet an der chinesischen) angewandt und mit Anfängen einer soziologischen Theorie der Zeitorien tie rung {Halb wachs) fortgeführt, konnten wegen der Ungunst der Zeitläufe -um die Dinge nicht beim Namen zu nennen -keine Tradition bilden. Sie wirkten später nur noch in mehrfacher Verwandlung über den Strukturalismus von Levi-Strauss in die Wissenssoziologie hinein.
