RESUMOABSTRACT -Ninety two primiparous cows at three years old (46 Braford -46 Hereford), were assigned to stocking rates (SR) of 240 kg/ha (T1) and 320 kg/ha (T2) on natural pasture, from 09.01.00 to 03.06.01, or 400 kg/ha (T3) on improved pasture of ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum L.) during 80 days postpartum, and after, at same SR of T2 on natural pasture until the conventional weaning (CW; 03.06.01). The breeding season was from 11.23.00 until 02.15.01. Early weaning (EW) was imposed to 46 cows in 01.01.01. Live weights at calving (LWC), beginning (LWB) and at the end of the breeding season (LWE) were not affected by the treatments. Treatments affected significantly the body condition at calving (BCC), beginning (BCI) and at the end of the breeding season (BCE). The Braford cows had higher LWC, LWB and LWE than the Hereford cows. The pregnancy rate (PR), calving interval (CI) and calving-conception interval (CCI) were not affected by EW. PR was not affected by the treatments (T1= 93.8%; T2= 90.6%; T3= 100%), neither by EW (EW= 97.8%; CW= 91.3%). However, at 21 days after the beginning of the breeding season, 15.6 and 17.9% of the cows in T1 and T3, respectively, were pregnant, while none cow (0.0%) in T2 was pregnant. At 42 days after the beginning of the breeding season, 46.9 and 71.4% of the cows in T1 and T3 were pregnant, respectively, and 37.5% of the cows in T2. Cows on T3 had CI (386.8 days) and CCI (101.8 days) shorter than cows on T2 (399.0 and 114.0 days, respectively).
Palavras-chave: acabamento de carcaça, idade de abate, idade de desmame, peso de abate, suplementação Performance and Carcass Traits of Braford Steers Weaned at 100 or 180 Days and Slaughtered at 13-14 Months OldABSTRACT -Live weight at the beginning of the finishing period (IFW), average daily gain (ADG), slaughter weight (SW), cold carcass weight (CCW), carcass dressing percentage (DP), subcutaneous fat thickness (SFT) and slaughter age in days (SA) of 32 castrated males Braford, previously weaned at 100 (EW) or 180 days (CW) and slaughtered at 13-14 months old, were evaluated. From CW (03/06/01) until the beginning of finishing period (08/09/01), when passed to an improved pasture of ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum L.), the calves were maintened on a rice (Oryza sativa) post-harvested paddock. From 09/04/01, the calves had a supplementary feeding, basically Sorghum vulgare, until the slaughters in november. The steers were slaughtered according the visual fatness, independently of the liveweight. The EW steers had IFW significantly lower than the CW steers (182,8 kg vs. 240.5 kg). However, the ADG was significant greater for EW steers, with adjusted means as 1.399 and 1.269 kg/day for EW and CW, respectively. SW and CCW were lighter for EW steers (328.8 and 359.4 of live weight and 174.0 and 186.7 kg of cold carcass ...
Palavras-chave: desmame precoce, escores visuais, ganho de peso, ultra-som Post-Weaning Growth, Visual Scores at Yearling Age and Carcass Traits of HeifersWeaned at 100 or 180 Days of Age ABSTRACT -This work was conducted with the aim to evaluate the influence of weaning age at 100 (EW) or 180 (CW) days old on the growth of Braford heifers until approximately 18 months old. The calves of EW were daily supplemented during 63 days, at quantity of 1% of their live weight, with a comercial ration with 18% of crude protein and 74% of total digestible nutrients. Average daily gain from birth to 205 days (G205), from this one until 365 days (G365) and from the last one until 550 days (G550) were evaluated. Live weight adjusted at 205 days (W205), at 365 days (W365) and at 550 days old (W550) were recorded. At yearling age, the visual scores of conformation (C), precocity (P) and musculature (M) were evaluated and the rib eye area (REA) and the subcutaneous fat thickness (SFT) were measured by ultrasound technique. G205 and the W205 were significantly lower for EW heifers (0.752 kg/day; 187.0 kg) than CW heifers (0.885 kg/day; 214.1 kg). However, EW heifers had ...
Palavras-chave: bezerros de corte, carga animal, ganho de peso, idade de desmame Effects of Post-Partum Management of Primiparous Cows on Growth of Beef Calves Up to One Year of AgeABSTRACT -The effects on the performance of calves submitted to: a) three treatments, consisted of post-partum stocking rates (CA) of 240 kg of live weight (LW)/ha (treatment 1, T1), of 320 kg of LW/ha (T2), both on natural pastures, and of 400 kg of LW/ha on improved pasture of Italian ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum L.) during the first 80 days post-partum, and after on natural pasture at the same stocking rate as T2 afterwards (T3); b) two weaning ages, consisted of weaning at 100 (EW) and at 180 (CW) days of age, were evaluated using 92 beef calves from Hereford and Braford primiparous cows. The sex of the calves affected significantly the birth weight, and no effect was observed for the breed of cow. The treatments and breed of cow did not affect the average daily gain (ADG) of the calves from birth to early weaning (GEW). Calves born from Braford cows had higher LW at EW (WEW) than calves born from Hereford cows, while the WEW was not affected by the treatments. Calves born from Braford cows on T2 had ADG up to 180 days (ADG180) and LW at 180 days (LW180) greater than calves born from Braford cows on T1 and Hereford cows on T2. Calves from CW had greater LW180 and ADG180 than calves from EW. However, treatments and weaning ages did not affect the LW at 365 days and the ADG up to 365 days of age. The three cows post-partum management sc...
