En 1963, Les Raisins verts , une nouvelle émission de variétés réalisée par Jean-Christophe Averty, provoque le désarroi puis la colère d’une partie du public de la RTF et de la critique spécialisée en matière de télévision. Le réalisateur, comme il le fit pour ses « dramatiques » dans lesquelles il adaptait des œuvres de la modernité littéraire (Apollinaire, Jarry), propose une énonciation télévisuelle totalement novatrice mais ce sont les « enchaînements » à l’humour iconoclaste et provocateur entre les chansons, sketchs et ballets qui sont au centre d’une violente campagne de presse. Jean-Christophe Averty est accusé de véhiculer un « surréalisme attardé » et l’émission ne connaîtra finalement que dix numéros après une année de mises en cause incessantes. Après avoir retracé dans ses grandes lignes la polémique engendrée par ces « raisins » décidément trop verts et questionné la notion d’« intermède », nous voudrions ici mettre ici en évidence ce qui ressortit plus directement à l’héritage du Surréalisme : sketchs d’humour noir, jeux « bêtes et méchants », images insolites au « degré d’arbitraire » (André Breton) élevé et « exquis » jeux de langage où triomphe la syllepse.
Cet article interroge l’image de la culture littéraire que la télévision française s’est efforcée de véhiculer pendant soixante ans auprès de ses téléspectateurs par le biais des adaptations audiovisuelles des œuvres littéraires selon un « postulat de désirabilité universelle des biens culturels » (P. Coulangeon). Comment se répartissent les adaptations selon les décennies de cette vaste période ? Quels sont les auteurs les plus adaptés au fil du temps ? Quels sont les genres littéraires les plus susceptibles de se prêter à cette transformation sémiotique qu’est l’adaptation ? Quelle est, au bout du compte, l’image de la grande culture qui est ainsi valorisée ? Telles sont les questions essentielles auxquelles s’efforce de répondre cette enquête rigoureuse qui conduit à la construction de diagrammes et à l’élaboration d’hypothèses concernant les stratégies de « distinction » qui président aux rapports entre littérature et télévision.
Dans les cahiers des charges de la télévision publique française, l’ambition culturelle est constamment réaffirmée mais la culture y est souvent pensée comme un apprentissage aussi douloureux que nécessaire... Sans cesse, on voit s’affronter les partisans d’une culture exigeante et ceux du divertissement. Et si les adaptations littéraires en costumes font encore recette, on nous propose à intervalles réguliers des « versions divertissantes » (Hanna Arendt) des grands auteurs du répertoire. Dans tous les cas, la référence (littéraire ou historique) reste éminemment désirable mais le produit culturel doit être conçu de telle manière qu’il atteigne au mieux son objectif de médiation culturelle. Nous mettrons ici en évidence la promesse équivoque de ces œuvres télévisuelles et les choix discursif et esthétique qui sont les leurs.
