Considerable variations in specific migration measurements are often observed when comparing results from different laboratories on apparently identical plastic/additive/liquid systems. In order to determine the influence of the various factors on reproducibility and repeatability in specific migration tests, and to develop an appropriate methodology, a collaborative study was undertaken with the participation of nine laboratories from the member countries of the EEC.Penta-erythrityl tetrakis-(3-(3,5-di-tert.butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl) propionate)-further referred to as Irganox 1010-and dihydroxybiphenyl (DHBP), were incorporated in high density polyethylene (HDPE). A water-ethanol mixture, olive oil and a synthetic fat were selected as test liquids for contact with the plastics under well-defined storage conditions. The study was carried out in four phases:(i) testing of a conventional h.p.l.c. method; (ii) testing and verification of a 14 C tracer technique; (iii) study of repeatability and reproducibility values in one-sided contact at constant temperature; (iv) investigation of the effect of storage conditions on repeatability and reproducibility criteria in one-and two-sided contact at two different temperatures. The collaborative exercise resulted in acceptable repeatability values for specific migration tests if storage conditions were accurately controlled.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
