Summary The occurrence and spread of viruses possibly concerned in causing respiratory diseases in horses in the Federal German Republic The participation of the viruses of rhinopneumonitis, equine and human influenza viruses, reoviruses, rhinoviruses and parainfluenza‐3‐virus in respiratory affections in the horse was studied from the point of view of the seroepizootiology and demonstration of the causal agent. In 376 sera from horses with respiratory diseases antibodies against the different viruses were present in the following percentages: rhinopneumonitis 68.3%, influenza‐A‐equi‐1 81.4%, influenza‐A‐equi‐2 52.1%, influenza/A2/Hongkong 4%, rhinovirus 70.4%, reovirus type 1 28.8%, reovirus type 2 9.0%, reovirus type 3 61.0%, parainfluenza‐3 0%. Isolation of the causal agent or examination of paired sera in studies with respiratory diseases demonstrated the participation of the following viruses in the disease conditions: rhinopneumonitis virus, influenza‐A‐equi‐1 and 2 and reoviruses types 1 and 3. SummaryA bovine adenovirus was isolated in cell cultures of calf testis from the shoulder lymph node of a leukotic cow. Biological and physico-chemical properties of the isolate are described.Serological differentiation revealed a close relationship with bovine adenovirus type 6 (RoccD~zs). In neutralization tests the virus was not related with human, simian, fowl, geese, dog, porcine and bovine (serotype 1--5) adenoviruses tested.Calves infected with the virus developed undulating fever, acute rhinitis, conjunctivitis and swelling of lymph nodes.Up to recently 5 different serotypes of bovine adenoviruses were known (1,2,3,6,7). These viruses were isolated fi'om the respiratory tract (2, 3) and from feces (6, 7) of calves. TANAKA and coworkers (11) and I•ABA et al. (5) propagated bovine adenovirus type 4 and another isolate to be differentiated (8) from blood of calves with rhinitis, diarrhea and fever. RONDtIUIS (9) and SoHoPov et al. (10) found contaminating bovine adenoviruses in cell cultures from calf kidney and testis. The latter strains were not related to serotypes 1--5, and were independently registered as serotype 6. BA~THA (personal communication) isolated an adenovirus from cattle (strain Misk 67) which also does not react with bovine serotypes 1--5.About one year ago we successfully propagated a cytopathogenic agent (strain 1116) from the shoulder lymph node of a cow with leukosis. Biological and physico-chemical properties of this isolate allowed its classification as adenovirus. The virus was isolated by continuous passages of lymph node material in calf testicular cell cultures. After 4 blind passages a cytopathic effect (CPE) was noticed, which began 2--3 days post infection. The CPE was characterized by granulation, rounding and subsequent lysis of cells. Infectivity titers of 104"7~ KIDs0/ml were recorded for cell cultures after adaptation.Intranuclear, multiple basophilic inclusion bodies were observed in hematoxylin-eosin stained infected cell cultures before CPE occurred. 272A. MAYR, G. WIZm~AN~, B. BIBRACK, and P. A. BACH~ANN:The isolated virus was stable against treatment with chloroform and showed the typical morphology of adenovirus particles in the electron microscope. Size of the particles varied between 75 and 80 m~z.The virus isolate 1116 shared a common group specific complement fixing antigen with bovine (serotype 1--4) and porcine (serotype 4) adenoviruses. In neutralization tests it did not show any serological relationship with human adenovirus types 1--31 (types 23 and 25 were not tested), simian adenoviruses (types SV 1,11, 15, 17, 33, 34, 36), with CELO virus of fowl, adenovirus of geese, canine hepatitis virus (Hec), the adenovirus strain A 26/61 from dogs, and serotypes I--4 of proeine adenoviruses.Furthermore it was not neutralized by specific hyperimmune sera against bovine adenovirus serotypes 1--51.From the neutralization tests a close relationship resulted between serotypes 6 of bovine adenoviruses of gOSDgUis (9) and isolate 1116, using type 6 immune serum and isolate 1...
Summary Serological studies on the occurrence of Teschen‐Talfan infections in pigs in Bavaria From 83 pig herds in Bavaria 224 serum samples were examined by the neutralisation test for Teschen‐Talfan infection. A titre of 1: 32 was taken as suspicious and 1: 64 as positive. The results show that Teschen‐Talfan infections are widespread. In older pigs one must reckon with some 75 % of silent infections and in young pigs about 60 %. For routine examination it suffices to work with 100 CID50 of virus in the neutralisation test. There are no differences between low passage (9th) and high passage (1195) strains of the Konratice strain of Teschen virus. The titre to Talfan viruses is somewhat higher than that against Teschen virus, subtype 1. Teschen and Talfan viruses belong to the same serotype within the pig enteroviruses. It is recommended to use either the term “Teschen‐Talfan‐Infection” or else the expression “Pig Poliomyelitis”. The transformation of the character of the disease from the paralytic infection in the direction of clinically inapparent infection and milder atypical forms of the disease is discussed in relation to control of the disease.
Summary Serological studies on the involvement of influenza A2/Hongkong virus infection in kennel cough in dogs The percentage of dogs in Western Germany with HI antibodies against A2/Hongkong virus is around 3.7 %. In dogs with acute kennel cough the percentage was as high as 87.5%. Six paired serum samples, taken at intervals of 2 weeks during an acute phase of the disease, showed a significant rise in the antibody titre to A2/Hongkong. The titres in the dog are usually relatively low and fall off within a few months. These findings suggest the possibility that influenza A2/Hongkong virus may participate in the development of kennel cough.
Summary Serological studies on the occurrence of viral infections in healthy dogs and dogs with kennel cough Sero‐epizootiological studies on the aetiology of kennel cough showed that in the Federal Republic of Germany Parainfluenza 1‐ and 3‐infections, as well as Reo 1‐ and 2‐infections are very little disseminated among the dog population. In contrast, Reo 3‐ (64.9 % — 87.8 %) and Influenza A 2/Hongkong infections (4.4 % — 66.2 %) are frequent. The percentage of animals with these infections is significantly higher in kennels with kennel cough than in healthy dog populations. The serum titres of healthy and coughing dogs, as well as the results with paired serum samples, suggest that kennel cough in Germany is caused mainly by mixed infection with Reovirus serotype 3 and Influenza A 2/Hongkong. From the point of view of pathogenesis, infection with the ubiquitous Reo 3 virus may form the basis for infection with Influenza A 2/Hongkong, after which non‐microbial factors such as pregnancy, change of environment, change of food, exposure to cold etc. may lead to progression to the clinical picture of kennel cough.
