Numerical prediction is performed on reduction zone of iron ore reactor which is a part of counter current gas-solid reactor for producing sponge iron. The aim of the present study is to investigate the effect of reduction gas composition and temperature on quality and capacity of sponge iron products through mathematical modeling arrangement and simulation. Simultaneous mass and energy balances along the reactor lead to a set of ordinary differential equation which includes kinetic equations. Kinetic equations of reduction of hematite to iron metal, methane reforming, and water gas shift reaction are taken into account in the model. Hydrogen and carbon monoxide are used as reduction gas. The equations were solved by finite element method. Prediction shows an increase in H 2 composition while an attenuation of CO produces higher metallization degree. Metallization degree is also increased with an increase in gas inlet temperature. It is found that reduction gas temperature over 973• C (1246 K) is not recommended because the formation of sticky iron will be initiated.
The highest volatile fatty acids (VFAs) concentration from palm oil mill effluent (POME) treated by anaerobic fermentation was achieved for a 1-day process when the main acids used were acetic, propionic and butyric acids. Polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) production with VFAs from POME as precursors in the fed-batch mode has advantages over batch mode, both in terms of its productivity and 3HV (3-hydroxyvalerate) composition in the produced polymer. With the fed batch, the productivity increased to 343% and contained more 3HV than those of the batch. The structures of the PHA were identified by different methods and they supported each other; the resulting products consisted of functional groups of 3HB (3-hydroxybutyrate) and 3HV.
A study on simulation and optimization of coupling reaction between methanol synthesis and isopropyl alcohol (IPA) dehydrogenation was performed. The analysis is carried out theoretically to obtain the optimum operation conditions which give the best performance. The reactions are just interacting thermally. In this study, both reactions are held catalytically in a heat-exchanger type reactor. As a high pressure reaction, methanol synthesis is placed in the inner side of reactor tube while dehydrogenation of IPA is in the opposite. Tube wall acts as a heat transfer media. The reactor is modeled by a steady state heterogeneous equation for a fixed bed reactor. Optimization is done in order to find the optimum value of operation conditions, those are the inlet temperature of both side of reactor and the molar feed flow ratio between the exothermic side and the endothermic side. Sum of weighted reaction conversion is considered to be the objective function that is maximized. The simulation result shows that coupled reactor makes the reaction conversion higher than a conventional adiabatic reactor and the optimum operation conditions give the maximum value of the conversion. This study presents a theoretical proof that coupling reaction is feasible.
We presented the mathematical model in the iron reactor. The model was limited to Isobaric Zone and Cooling Zone termed as IZ and CZ, respectively. The simulation was done by adapting the heat and mass transfer equations. The main purpose of this paper is to estimate the temperature increasing effect of reduced-iron on sponge-iron quality. The calculations are solved using Finite Element Method (FEM). The results showed that the temperature and concentration values from the simulation have high similarity to the reference data with Root-Mean-Square Error (RMSE) about 0.7. The formation of total-carbon in the both zones decreased metallization degree until 1.72%. The increase in reduced-iron temperature higher than 1200 K produces total-carbon higher than 3%. Thus the increase in reduced-iron temperature more than 1200 K is not recommended because it can decrease metallization degree.
