Role play activities contribute to learners' performance if they actively participate in a group. Learners may gain confidence when given a proper and clear role in role play which enhances their motivation levels. This study adopts Byram (2004) resultative and motivational hypothesis and Eccles et al. (1983) Expectancy-Value theory as underlying theories to investigate the relationship between attitude toward role play and subjective role play value to account for Arabic language proficiency. The data were analyzed using more recent confirmatory analysis which is now available in SmartPLS 3.2.6 called consistent PLS (PLSc). Using a sample of 331 students from UiTM campuses at Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang, the analysis showed that these theories support a sound framework for predicting Arabic language proficiency. Additionally, Arabic language proficiency was significantly influenced by attitude towards role play and subjective role play value. Attitude toward role play and subjective role play value are found to be positively influencing Arabic language proficiency. The R 2 was measured as 0.308 for Arabic language proficiency. Therefore, it is believed that these findings will be considered as a useful source of information to lecturers, teachers, institutions, and management in supporting role play practices and thus enhancing Arabic language proficiency among UiTM students. Contribution/Originality: This study is one of the very few that have investigated motivational factors regarding Arabic language proficiency through active participation in role play activities. The application of recent confirmatory analysis in SmartPLS 3.2.6 provides more reliable results, contributing to the existing body of literature with empirical evidence on language proficiency.
Role playing is among the language activities that stimulate language learners to use the language they are learning. However, a successful activity is always challenging especially when the learners are beginners. Therefore, a special arrangement needs to be carried out by instructors. This article explores the use of storyboards, or ‘PCVA’, to help Arabic learners prepare for their video project based on role playing. Blended methods were used to collect data, namely surveys, interviews, and observations. The target participants were among degree students from second level (TAC451) and third level (TAC501) of Arabic course. The total number of the participants is 87 respondents. Interview and observation were conducted during consultation period and then, related information was documented for the purpose of the study. Descriptive analysis was implemented to interpret the data. The findings showed a positive feedback from the learners who were involved in the experiment.
Islamic Thought and Civilization (CTU151) is a compulsory course for second year diploma Muslim students in Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM). Conventional methods of teaching and learning (T&L) are quite dull and failed to tackle students’ interest in the subject. Therefore, the usage of video and Padlet is proposed to be an alternative for teaching method in settling the problem faced during the T&L process. This research aims at measuring students’ perception on the suitability of the proposed methods of T&L either inside or outside the classroom. Pilot study was conducted using questionnaire by distributing it to 35 respondents and the data were analyzed using SPSS version 22. Then, descriptive analysis was used to measure students’ perception on the related questions. The result shows that high scale of the students’ perception on the using of PVdP at average mean score of 3.93. The finding implies that using the PVdP innovative method in the classroom managed to overcome the classroom dullness environment, led the students to become happier, and improvised their understanding because Padlet is a Web 2.0 application that could be used for learning collaboration and as a communication tool among students. In fact, technology integration through video and Padlet is one of the mechanisms that stimulates good T&L process and also helps to boost students’ performance in this course. Kaedah konvensional yang digunakan di dalam kelas bagi proses pengajaran dan pembelajaran (PdP) menyebabkan pelajar berasa subjek ini agak membosankan dan kurang minat untuk belajar atas alasan kaedah penyampaian yang digunakan adalah mendatar dan kurang menarik. Justeru, kaedah penggunaan video dan Padlet (PVdP) menjadi alternatif bagi menyelesaikan masalah yang dihadapi semasa proses PdP kursus Pemikiran dan Tamadun Islam dilaksanakan. Kajian ini dilakukan untuk mengukur persepsi pelajar terhadap kesesuaian pelaksanaan PVdP dalam proses PdP di dalam dan di luar kelas. Kajian rintis dilakukan dengan menggunakan kaedah soal selidik dengan bilangan responden seramai 35 orang dan data dianalisa menggunakan SPSS versi 22. Selanjutnya, analisis statistik dengan ujian min (purata) digunakan bagi mengukur persepsi responden terhadap soalan-soalan yang diberikan. Hasil dapatan menunjukkan persepsi pelajar terhadap pelaksanaan PVdP di dalam kelas berada pada skala yang tinggi apabila purata skor min yang diperolehi ialah 3.93. Ini bermakna, inovasi PVdP di dalam kelas mampu untuk mengatasi masalah rasa bosan malah pelajar merasa seronok dan dapat meningkatkan kefahaman mereka terhadap pembelajaran yang disampaikan kerana Padlet merupakan aplikasi Web 2.0 yang boleh digunakan untuk berkolaborasi dan berkomunikasi bagi tujuan pembelajaran. Aplikasi ini juga dilihat mampu untuk memudahkan hubungan komunikasi antara pelajar. Ini jelas menunjukkan bahawa integrasi teknologi melalui PVdP dalam pendidikan adalah salah satu contoh mekanisme yang berupaya merangsang proses PdP yang baik dan berkesan di dalam pendidikan dan secara tidak langsung dapat membantu melonjakkan lagi prestasi pelajar dalam kursus yang diajar. Realitinya, individu yang digelar sedemikian dalam konteks Malaysia merupakan antara individu yang telah lama memeluk Islam. Perkara seumpama ini mampu mempengaruhi interaksi dan integrasi dalam kalangan komuniti Saudara Baru, komuniti Muslim asal dan ahli keluarga asal bukan Muslim. Selanjutnya, ia menimbulkan isu etnik akibat ketidakfahaman berhubung isu-isu yang berlegar dalam kehidupan Saudara Baru. Sehubungan itu, istilah Muhajir dilihat lebih sesuai dengan maksud Saudara Baru dalam konteks Malaysia yang lebih menonjol sebagai penjana interaksi dan toleransi beragama dalam kalangan warga Malaysia yang beraneka etnik. Justeru, kajian ini bertujuan melihat pengalaman toleransi beragama dalam kehidupan komuniti Muhajir-Muslim-non-Muslim. Data diperolehi menggunakan kaedah kualitatif dengan tumpuan kepada kaedah temu bual ke atas dua puluh orang Muhajir di Kuala Terengganu, Terengganu, Malaysia. Hasil dapatan memperlihatkan bahawa situasi yang ditonjolkan dalam hubungan Muslim-bukan Muslim-komuniti Muhajir di negeri Terengganu telah menyerlahkan budaya toleransi dalam kepelbagaian hidup bersama. Hubungan ini diperlihatkan melalui jalinan perkenalan, pertemuan dan tinggal bersama yang membentuk hubungan persahabatan, persaudaraan dan persemendaan merentas batasan agama. Ini menunjukkan Muhajir memainkan peranan dalam melestarikan pemupukan toleransi khususnya dalam hubungan Muslim dan bukan Muslim di Malaysia.
Bagi sesebuah negara yang mempunyai etnik pelbagai anutan kepercayaan dan perbezaan amalan budaya, dialog antara agama berperanan membetulkan semula kekaburan dalam kehidupan beragama dan berbudaya. Melalui peranan Saudara Baru, dialog antara agama mampu menjadi medan bagi menjelaskan kebenaran tentang agama Islam kepada masyarakat bukan Muslim dan pelaksanaan amalan budaya asal kepada Muslim asal. Objektif kajian ini ialah melihat pengalaman pelaksanaan dialog antara agama di Terengganu dan relevansi dalam kehidupan beragama di negara Brunei. Metode kajian ini menggunakan kajian dokumen yang menyentuh komuniti Cina Muslim di Terengganu dan Brunei. Pengalaman pelaksanaan dialog antara agama di Terengganu dan negara Brunei memperlihatkan dialog antara agama mampu membetulkan salah faham dan selanjutnya mengendurkan ketegangan hubungan antara agama dan budaya antara komuniti Saudara Baru, ahli keluarga bukan Muslim dan masyarakat Muslim asal. Biarpun begitu, adalah dicadangkan agar kajian yang menyentuh dialog antara agama perlu diperkukuhkan sebagai medium membina semula peradaban memandangkan penduduk di kedua-dua lokasi ini terdiri daripada berbilang etnik dan agama sedangkan pada masa yang sama masalah yang menyentuh hubungan antara agama sentiasa timbul. Abstract: For a country with diverse ethics of beliefs and cultural practices, interfaith dialogue plays a role to redefine ambiguity in religious and cultural life. Through the role of the New Muslim (Muslim Convert), interfaith dialogue can become a medium to explain the truth about Islam to the non-Muslims and the implementation of real cultural practices to the others Muslim. The objective of this study is to examine the experience of interfaith dialogue in Terengganu and in Brunei. The method of this study is being conducted in document research that related with the Muslim Chinese community in Terengganu and Brunei. In addition, interviews with people involved in the management of New Muslims also carried out. The experience of interfaith dialogue in Terengganu and Brunei shows that dialogue capable explains misunderstandings and further loosening the tension between religion and culture among New Muslims, non-Muslim family members and Muslim communities. However, it is recommended that studies on interfaith dialogue should be strengthened as a medium for rebuilding civilization as the residents of both locations are multi-ethnic and religious while at the same time the problem of interreligious persists.
