Nickel (Ni) and Cadmium (Cd) considered as an essential nutrient where plants cannot complete their life cycle in its absence and cannot be substituted with any other element. Ni was first established as an essential nutrient for the completion of the life cycle and it was reported that Ni deficiency decreases the capacity of plants to develop viable seeds because of hindrance of embryo growth. The uptake of Ni in plants is mainly carried out through the root system via passive diffusion and active transport. The ratio of uptake between active and passive transport varies with the species. It has been reported that plant species and cultivars significantly differ in the uptake of Cd and its subsequent translocation from roots into shoots. Higher Cd accumulation in roots than leaves suggest that Cd transport to the xylem is restricted and Cd is not readily translocated in the phloem. Also, Cd accumulation in root and leaf also depends on binding to the extracellular matrix due to which a significant inhibition of root elongation may be observed. In a study, it was reported that Cd was translocated from lower leaves to upper leaves, and then from upper leaves to culms and ears. Lower leaves accumulated highest Cd content during the early growth stages. However, heavy metals accumulating in the food chain pose risk for health of living being as well as cytotoxicity in plants

This study was carried out to evaluate the effect of continuous exposure to hypobaric hypoxia on the feeding behavior and taste responses of rats, under simulated conditions of a high altitude (HA) of 7,620 m for 21 h a day and consecutively for 18 d, which more closely resembles actual field conditions. Their food, water intake and body weight were recorded daily, and blood sugar was estimated once a week. All the parameters were recorded for a period of 18 d each, before, during, and after exposure to simulated HA. The results show a decrease in daily food and water intake and body weight, and mild hypoglycemia during hypoxic exposure. Single-bottle and two-bottle tests showed a preference for sweet solutions over water, citric acid, sodium chloride, and quinine sulfate during exposure. The two-bottle test showed a preference for glucose over calorically-inert saccharine. The continuous exposure in this study produced qualitatively similar but quantitatively accentuated results as compared to intermittent 6 h exposure contiguously for 21 d. High-altitude stress appears to influence food intake such that sensory cues assume greater significance during feeding behavior.

Silicon (Si) is the most abundant element on earth after oxygen and is very important for plant growth under stress conditions. In the present study, we inspected the role of Si in the mitigation of the negative effect of salt stress at three concentrations (40 mM, 80 mM, and 120 mM NaCl) in two wheat varieties (KRL-210 and WH-1105) with or without Si (0 mM and 2 mM) treatment. Our results showed that photosynthetic pigments, chlorophyll stability index, relative water content, protein content, and carbohydrate content were reduced at all three salt stress concentrations in both wheat varieties. Moreover, lipid peroxidation, proline content, phenol content, and electrolyte leakage significantly increased under salinity stress. The antioxidant enzyme activities, like catalase and peroxidase, were significantly enhanced under salinity in both leaves and roots; however, SOD activity was drastically decreased under salt stress in both leaves and roots. These negative effects of salinity were more pronounced in WH-1105, as KRL-210 is a salt-tolerant wheat variety. On the other hand, supplementation of Si improved the photosynthetic pigments, relative water, protein, and carbohydrate contents in both varieties. In addition, proline content, MDA content, and electrolyte leakage were shown to decline following Si application under salt stress. It was found that applying Si enhanced the antioxidant enzyme activities under stress conditions. Si showed better results in WH-1105 than in KRL-210. Furthermore, Si was found to be more effective at a salt concentration of 120 mM compared to low salt concentrations (40 mM, 80 mM), indicating that it significantly improved plant growth under stressed conditions. Our experimental findings will open a new area of research in Si application for the identification and implication of novel genes involved in enhancing salinity tolerance.

Among four cultivars of Brassica juncea L., viz., TM-4, TM-2, cv. T-59 was relatively more tolerant to nickel (Ni) toxicity based on the growth parameters, seedling vigor index, and metal tolerance index. Nickel application inhibited the activity of the nitrate-assimilating enzyme nitrate reductase in the roots, stem, and leaves, whereas the total organic nitrogen, proline, and activity of a polyamine-metabolizing enzyme, diamine oxidase, increased in this tolerant cultivar (T-59). It accumulated a good amount of Ni from the soil in its root and shoot (i.e., 6.0-6.51 mg Ni g À1 dry weight) during 2 months of cultivation with an 8.0 mM Ni supply in the soil. The data presented in this paper indicate that Ni tolerance and its removal by Indian mustard from subtropical Indian soil is cultivar dependent, possibly due to different genetic and physiological adaptations of the cultivars.
