The plants of the Nepeta genus have been extensively used as traditional herbal medicines. Nepeta cadmea Boiss., one of the species belonging to the Nepeta genus, is a species endemic to Turkey. In our study, we demonstrated the antioxidant capacities, total phenolic, flavonoid, tannin content, anthelmintic, and cytotoxic activities of various extracts of Nepeta cadmea. The present study could well supply valuable data for future investigations and further information on the potential use of this endemic plant for humans, in both dietary and pharmacological applications.
Asparagus acutifolius L. (wild asparagus) is an edible plant species that is widely distributed throughout the Mediterranean. This study was designed to investigate the phenolic compounds, antioxidant, and cytotoxic activities of ethanol and water extracts of different parts (fruits and leaves) of A. acutifolius. The antioxidant activities of these extracts were analyzed using scavenging methods (DPPH and ABTS scavenging activity), the β-carotene/linoleic acid test system and the phosphomolybdenum method. Among the evaluations of the ethanol and water extracts of the different parts of A. acutifolius, the ethanol extract of the leaves was shown to have the highest amount of radical scavenging activities (DPPH, 0.383 mg/mL and ABTS, 0.145 mg/mL). Each extract of A. acutifolius exhibited strong antioxidant capacities with the β-carotene/Linoleic acid test system. For the phosphomolybdenum method, the antioxidant capacity of the extracts was in the range of 8.89-45.29 µg/mg and each extract exhibited high cytotoxic activities. The results will provide additional information for future studies on the biological activities of A. acutifolius, while also helping us to understand the importance of this species.
The present study outlines the antioxidant and toxic activity, total phenol, flavonoid and tannin content of Digitalis ferruginea's extracts in addition to evaluating its proximate parameters and mineral elements. Successive extraction was made using different solvents (ethanol, acetone, water). Total phenol content was determined by the Folin-Ciocalteu's reagent method and flavonoid was determined by the aluminum chloride colorimetric method. The antioxidant activities were investigated using different assays. The phenolics were determined using HPLC. In addition an evaluation was made of the proximate parameters and mineral elements. The radical scavenging capacities were highest in the water extract. The same extract was effective in total antioxidant activities (β-carotene, 83.75%). The acetone extract demonstrated stronger reducing power and phosphomolybdenum antioxidant activity with 0.52 mg/mL and, 107.43 µg/mg, respectively. The HPLC results determined major phenolics: rutin and ferulic acid. This plant also have rich in polyphenolic content together with toxic activity and possesses nutrients and mineral elements. As well as demonstrating the good antioxidant activity of D. ferruginea this study suggest that the plant could be of particular interest from a practical perspective, as it is a significant source of potential natural antioxidants that can be used for the prevention of a range of diseases.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
