Münster"kirchen und kapellen des mittelalters durchdringt mit schwülem grabgeruch ein anbeten todter knochen" -so Jacob Grimm in seiner 1844 publizierten "Deutschen Mythologie"Und wirklich, man wird schwerlich ein weiteres Thema nennen können, das gleichermaßen im konfessionellen und aufklärerischen Streit zuschanden geworden ist wie die mittelalterliche Reliquienverehrung. Der Abscheu setzt sich bis in moderne Publikationen fort. Mit Reliquien konfrontiert, suchen sich nicht wenige Autoren ironisch und sarkastisch von allzu peinlich erscheinenden Quellenbefunden oder auch von zur Schau gestellten Reliquiensammlungen zu distanzieren. Selbst für Hippolyte Delehaye (f 1941), den um die wissenschaftliche Hagiographie so verdienten Neubollandisten, zeigt der Reliquienkult "allzu natürliche Übertreibungen", "ja Ausschreitungen"; denn "der Hang der Menge zu materiellen und greifbaren Dingen ist zu bekannt", und insbesondere "der Leib oder das Standbild des Heiligen, die zu den Augen des Volkes sprechen, machen mehr Eindruck" 2 ; überhaupt äußere sich in den Legenden "die Intelligenz der Menge", die "tief unter der Mittelmäßigkeit" stehe; es seien "Gedanken, deren das Hirn des Volkes fähig ist, äußerst beschränkt" 3 ; denn "außerhalb eines ausnahmsweise begabten Kreises besitzt der Durchschnitt der Menschen nicht die zur objektiven Darstellung nötigen intellektuellen Fähigkeiten" 4 . Im folgenden soll versucht werden, die mittelalterliche Reliquienverehrung von einem Befund her anzugehen, der angesichts seiner reichen Bezeugung als durchaus zentral bezeichnet werden muß: Es ist die Idee und der Kult des ,corpus incorruptum*. Das Phänomen des im Grab unverwest gebliebenen Leibes als zentrale Vorstellung der ganzen Reliquienverehrung aufzufassen, ist schon deswegen keine Willkür, weil die Inkorruptheit religionsgeschichtlich eine verbreitete Vorstellung ist und so auch in die christliche Reliquienverehrung einzudringen vermochte; bis heute gilt die Unverwestheit des Leibes als Kriterium im kirchlichen Heiligsprechungsverfahren 5 .
