Large datasets are now ubiquitous as technology enables higher-throughput experiments, but rarely can a research field truly benefit from the research data generated due to inconsistent formatting, undocumented storage or improper dissemination. Here we extract all the meaningful device data from peer-reviewed papers on metal-halide perovskite solar cells published so far and make them available in a database. We collect data from over 42,400 photovoltaic devices with up to 100 parameters per device. We then develop open-source and accessible procedures to analyse the data, providing examples of insights that can be gleaned from the analysis of a large dataset. The database, graphics and analysis tools are made available to the community and will continue to evolve as an open-source initiative. This approach of extensively capturing the progress of an entire field, including sorting, interactive exploration and graphical representation of the data, will be applicable to many fields in materials science, engineering and biosciences.

Scalable methods for deposition of lead halide perovskite thin films are required to enable commercialization of the highly promising perovskite photovoltaics. Here, we have developed a slot-die coating process under ambient conditions for methylammonium lead iodide (MAPbI 3 ) perovskite on heated substrates (about 90 °C on the substrate surface). Dense, highly crystalline perovskite films with large grains (100–200 μm) were obtained by careful adjustment of the deposition parameters, using solutions that are similar but more dilute than those used in typical spin-coating procedures. Without any further after treatments, such as antisolvent treatment or vapor annealing, we achieved power conversion efficiencies up of 14.5% for devices with the following structure: conducting tin oxide glass (FTO)/TiO 2 /MAPbI 3 /spiro-MeOTAD/Au. The performance was limited by the significant roughness of the deposited films, resulting from the hot-casting method, and the relatively high deposition temperature, which led to a defect-rich surface due to loss of MAI.

Hybrid perovskites have created enormous research interest as a low-cost material for high-performance photovoltaic devices, light-emitting diodes, photodetectors, memory devices and sensors. Perovskite materials in nanocrystal form that display intense luminescence due to the quantum confinement effect were found to be particularly suitable for most of these applications. However, the potential use of perovskite nanocrystals as a light-harvesting antenna for possible applications in artificial photosynthesis systems is not yet explored. In the present work, we study the light-harvesting antenna properties of luminescent methylammonium lead bromide (CH NH PbBr )-based perovskite nanocrystals using fluorescent dyes (rhodamine B, rhodamine 101, and nile red) as energy acceptors. Our studies revealed that CH NH PbBr nanocrystals are an excellent light-harvesting antenna, and efficient fluorescence resonance energy transfer occurs from the nanocrystals to fluorescent dyes. Further, the energy transfer efficiency is found to be highly dependent on the number of anchoring groups and binding ability of the dyes to the surface of the nanocrystals. These observations may have significant implications for perovskite-based light-harvesting devices and their possible use in artificial photosynthesis systems.
