This paper presents the evaluation of compressive strength of soil-cement bricks obtained by the inclusion in their mixture of PET flakes through mineral water bottles grinding. The Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET) has been characterized by its difficulty of disaggregation in nature, requiring a long period for this. On the other hand, with the increase in civil construction activities the demand for raw material also increases, causing considerable environmental impacts. In this context, the objective of this research is to propose a simple methodology, preventing its dumping and accumulation in irregular areas, and reducing the demand of raw materials by the civil construction industry. The results showed that compressive strengths obtained were lower than recommended by NBR 8491 (Associação Brasileira de Normas Técnicas [ABNT], 2012b) at seven days of curing time. However, they may be used as an alternative solution in masonry works in order to not submit themselves to great loads or structural functions. The studied bricks also presented water absorption near to recommended values by NBR 8491 (ABNT, 2012b). Manufacturing costs were also determined for this brick, comparing it with the costs of other brick types. Each brick withdrew from circulation approximately 300 g of PET waste. Thus, for an area of 1 m 2 the studied bricks can promote the withdrawal of approximately 180 beverage bottles of 2 L capacity.
This research studies soil-compacted bricks using Phosphogypsum (PG) in their dosage. Aiming to assess the physical characteristics of these bricks, laboratory tests were performed. To obtain the bricks, two dosages were used: 4 and 7% of Phosphogypsum (PG) concentration. Bricks with no Phosphogypsum (PG) in their mixture were also assessed as a benchmark. The brick's physical characteristics were obtained for bricks dried by the sun and in an oven at 900 o C for 96 hours. The results of the laboratory tests were analyzed through statistical analysis to explore the differences between the means for each studied condition (dosage and drying method). We found no statistically signi cant difference between the mean strength of bricks with 4% of Phosphogypsum (PG) in their dosage and bricks with no PG. Beyond 4% of Phosphogypsum (PG) dosage, the brick's strength presented a reduction. For all dosages, bricks dried in the oven showed higher strength than bricks dried by the sun. However, according to the Brazilian Technical Standards, all studied bricks presented enough strength to be used in regular constructions. We conclude that Phosphogypsum (PG) for brick manufacturing can be an alternative way for its disposal, which can help mitigate the civil construction environmental impacts.

The building growth has resulted in a significant amount of solid wastes and the consumption of vast amounts of natural aggregates. On the other hand, the use of gabions is a well-established technical solution for retaining walls construction. This research intends to assess the use of C&DW (Construction and Demolition Wastes) as filling material for basket gabions. Nowadays, a significant part of basket gabions is filled with rocks. However, the extraction of these natural materials usually causes environmental damages. Facing this situation, the use of C&DW for rock substitution on gabions filling can reduce these environmental impacts and the costs. Due to this situation, laboratory tests were performed to obtain the compressive strength of C&DW. The specimens were carved as recommended by ABNT NBR NM 7680-1/2015 "Concrete -Sampling, preparing, testing and result analysis of concrete cores Part 1: Axial compressive strength". To verify internal fissures existence, that could affect the specimen's compressive strength; ultrasound tests were performed according to ABNT NBR 8802/2019 "Hardened concrete-Determination of ultrasonic wave transmission velocity". Compressive tests were performed to obtain the specimen's strength following the procedures given by ABNT NBR NM 8522/2017 "Concrete -Determination of the elasticity modulus by compression". For gabions behavior, compressive tests using reduced models were performed. It can be concluded that the use of C&DW for gabion baskets filling trends to be an alternative solution for retaining walls design and construction. Besides, it has environmental advantages such as reducing natural raw materials exploitations, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and others.
