The dental care for individuals with cerebral palsy (CP) often result in the referral of patients for general anesthesia. Conscious sedation with nitrous oxide (N2O) could be an alternative resource, from a behavioral and physiological point of view, and could favor dental care in an outpatient setting. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of conscious sedation with N2O on respiratory rate (RR) and oxygen saturation (SpO2) in the dental treatment of individuals with CP. Seventy-seven patients with CP, over 3 years old, regardless of gender and ethnicity, were evaluated with the measurement of N2O titration, RR and SpO2 in four moments: initial, 5 minutes after sedation, 10 minutes after anesthesia and 5 minutes after removal of the N2O. Student's t test and ANOVA F were used, with a significance level of 5%. The variation in N2O titration did not generate significant variation in RR (p = 0.122). There was a significant difference in SpO2 between T1 and other times. It can be said that conscious sedation is not influenced by N2O titration, does not cause respiratory depression or any clinically significant change in SpO2, confirming the safety of use in an outpatient setting.
Objective:The aim of this study was to assess the bone density of the mandible in adolescents with cerebral palsy (CP) treated with antiepileptic drugs using one beam computed tomography (CBCT). Methods: The study was carried out with 18 adolescents aged 12-18 years, undergoing routine dental treatment at the dental clinic of APCD-São Caetano do Sul. CBCT scans were of divided into two groups: G1 adolescents with CP using antiepileptic drugs and G2 normoactive adolescents. A single dentomaxillofacial radiologist assessed and evaluated the images using Dental Slice software and Image J. Fisher's exact tests as well as paired and unpaired Student's t-tests were performed. Results: Groups differed significantly with regard in the values of density (p < 0.001), with G1 presenting lower values compare to G2. G1 showed significantly lower density means on the right side, left side, and right/left sides of the mandible edge than G2 (p < 0.001). Conclusion: CP patients using antiepileptic drugs show evidence of bone mineral density loss of the mandible.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the surface changes of glass ceramics, submitted to artificial aging by simulated brushing with different toothpastes, using a brushing machine designed by the authors. Twenty-four specimens were made in the form of an upper right central incisor, in color A1 and made up in color A3; divided into 4 groups with n =6. The mechanical tests were performed by a brushing machine at an ambient temperature of 37ºC, with a frequency of 250 strokes per minute, under 250mg brush pressure and simultaneous dripping of the dentifrice solution. Test times were divided into: 0; 25,000; 50,000; 75,000; 100,000; 125,000 and 150,000 strokes and the parameters analyzed by a rugosimeter. The obtained values of surface roughness (SR) were submitted to the Kolmogorov-Smirnov test (p=0.321) to verify the normality of the data distribution and, later, to the Levene test (p=0.076). The results obtained showed that the aging time did not influence the surface roughness of the glass ceramics, there were differences in surface roughness in some toothpastes. Thus, it can be concluded that the glass ceramics were susceptible to mass loss, but resistant to the action of toothpastes. Dentifrices with anti-plaque and anti-tartar characteristics can change the surface over time.
