Les Baronnies des Pyrénées, situées dans les Pyrénées centrales, s'adossent à la chaîne de montagnes. Cette région se compose d'un ensemble de 28 communes qui connurent dans les cent dernières années un intense exode rural. Dans le cadre d'une étude interdisciplinaire réunissant historiens, ethnologues, géographes et médecins hémotypologistes, je fus chargée d'analyser les antécédents démographiques de cet ensemble villageois géographiquement et socialement bien défini.L'unité de base du système économique et social est la maison, dont le nom, transmis d'une génération à l'autre, désigne à la fois la famille (et tous les individus qui la composent, quelle que soit leur origine), le lieu d'habitation et le patrimoine foncier.
The stem-family system tells us much about the mechanisms controlling reproduction in rural areas and the important role women played as mothers, heiresses, or in other roles. In this article, two stem-family rural societies are compared, one located in the central Pyrenees in Europe (Esparros), the other in northeastern Japan (Aizu domain and Nihonmatsu domain). Both are in mountainous areas. Particular attention is paid to the role of adopted sons and sons-in-law in family transmission processes. D
