Mesoporous magnesium oxide of high surface area (>350 m 2 /g) has been synthesized by a simple ammonia precipitation method from aqueous magnesium nitrate solution. This material has been evaluated for CO 2 adsorption in the temperature and pressure regime relevant to precombustion capture in integrated gasification combined cycle (IGCC) scheme. CO 2 adsorption capacities were also compared with magnesium oxides obtained by other synthetic routes such as hydrothermal urea hydrolysis and direct thermal degradation of magnesium nitrate respectively.The mesoporous magnesium oxide shows CO 2 capacity at high temperatures which is comparable or even exceeding the capacity values for this class of high temperature CO 2 adsorbents reported in literature so far.
