RésuméEn Suisse comme en France, les communautés de religieuses vieillissent. En cas de dépendance liée à l'âge, la prise en charge coutumière des plus âgées par les plus jeunes n'est plus envisageable. Cet article se base sur une étude sociologique qui analyse la transformation de couvents de religieuses catholiques en maisons de retraite situées en Suisse et en France. Ces transformations mettent en évidence un mode de régulation entre congrégations et États qui diffère d'un pays à l'autre et qui révèle des inégalités de traitement. Entre reconnaissance par l'État afin de bénéficier des mesures assurantielles et volonté de vieillir chez elles, les religieuses innovent, tentant ainsi de se réapproprier un avenir, fût-il compté.

Fondé sur l’étude du cas valaisan (Suisse), cet article rendra compte de l’aide à domicile accordée par des proches à un parent âgé dépendant et de son placement définitif en maison de retraite. Dans un premier temps, l’accent portera sur les aspects problématiques de l’aide. Les impératifs de survie quotidienne d’un des membres du collectif de résidence menacent dans certains cas la survie symbolique du groupe. Une fois les limites de l’aide à domicile atteintes, le placement du parent âgé est sans alternative et sera définitif. Dans un deuxième temps, une modalité d’entrée en institution sera examinée. Franchir le seuil de la maison de retraite s’apparente à un rite familial – un repas d’accueil – organisé par l’établissement. De par la proximité avec la mort, ce repas d’accueil revêt les attributs d’un repas funéraire et remet au premier plan la dimension symbolique du groupe de filiation. Dans un troisième temps, l’analyse d’une pratique soignante – « faire l’entrée » – nous renseignera sur la nécessité de réécrire l’histoire du résident. Bien qu’ils s’en défendent, les soignants remplacent les proches, jusqu’au moment de la séparation définitive. Mais surtout, en rétablissant la continuité menacée, ils restaurent une possible inscription de ceux-ci dans la lignée. Du domicile à l’entrée en maison de retraite, deux logiques collectives coexistent sans s’opposer : la logique de la survie quotidienne des vivants et celle de la continuité symbolique avec les morts.
Dans ce texte, l’autrice reprend des éléments de sa trajectoire de sociologue et d’infirmière en mettant en évidence la matérialité des corps malades et souillés dont les femmes des familles et les soignantes professionnelles ont la charge. Sans esquive, elle montre que ce face-à-face des corps, indispensable pour celui ou celle qui nécessite de l’aide, est difficile et souvent ignoré.
