Comme l'écrivait Moniot (2005), « l'enseignement de l'histoire ne vise pas seulement à "transmettre" des énoncés proposés par les historiens qui les ont raisonnablement produits [...] il faut assurer en même temps l'apprentissage d'un rapport raisonnable aux énoncés historiques ». C'est cela qui rend possible la combinaison de fonctions diverses dans l'histoire scolaire, chargée d'enseigner des références civiques et mémorielles, comme de développer des capacités critiques. Cette diversité même fait la richesse de cet enseignement et sa difficulté. Mais si « tout le monde pense en histoire à sa façon », l'enjeu d'une didactique de l'histoire serait de documenter les conditions du développement d'une pensée historienne à l'école, propre à construire progressivement cette « raison historienne » (Moniot, 1987). C'est cet enjeu qu'explore la première partie de ce texte. L'ancrage de l'apprentissage dans une « pensée historienne » valorise la dimension épistémologique et, du moins en France, répond au souci de se différencier des sciences expérimentales et de leur didactique. L'affirmation de la spécificité de la didactique de l'histoire par rapport à la didactique des sciences conduit en effet à s'inscrire dans les débats épistémologiques sur le rapport entre connaissances spontanées et connaissances scientifiques.
