Due to its perennial nature and size, the acquisition of phenotypic data in grapevine research is almost exclusively restricted to the field and done by visual estimation. This kind of evaluation procedure is limited by time, cost and the subjectivity of records. As a consequence, objectivity, automation and more precision of phenotypic data evaluation are needed to increase the number of samples, manage grapevine repositories, enable genetic research of new phenotypic traits and, therefore, increase the efficiency in plant research. In the present study, an automated field phenotyping pipeline was setup and applied in a plot of genetic resources. The application of the PHENObot allows image acquisition from at least 250 individual grapevines per hour directly in the field without user interaction. Data management is handled by a database (IMAGEdata). The automatic image analysis tool BIVcolor (Berries in Vineyards-color) permitted the collection of precise phenotypic data of two important fruit traits, berry size and color, within a large set of plants. The application of the PHENObot represents an automated tool for high-throughput sampling of image data in the field. The automated analysis of these images facilitates the generation of objective and precise phenotypic data on a larger scale.

The berry size is one of the most important fruit traits in grapevine breeding. Non-invasive, image-based phenotyping promises a fast and precise method for the monitoring of the grapevine berry size. In the present study an automated image analyzing framework was developed in order to estimate the size of grapevine berries from images in a high-throughput manner. The framework includes (i) the detection of circular structures which are potentially berries and (ii) the classification of these into the class 'berry' or 'non-berry' by utilizing a conditional random field. The approach used the concept of a one-class classification, since only the target class 'berry' is of interest and needs to be modeled. Moreover, the classification was carried out by using an automated active learning approach, i.e. no user interaction is required during the classification process and in addition, the process adapts automatically to changing image conditions, e.g. illumination or berry color. The framework was tested on three datasets consisting in total of 139 images. The images were taken in an experimental vineyard at different stages of grapevine growth according to the BBCH scale. The mean berry size of a plant estimated by the framework correlates with the manually measured berry size by 0.88. 1

In viticulture, phenotypic data are traditionally collected directly in the field via visual and manual means by an experienced person. This approach is time consuming, subjective and prone to human errors. In recent years, research therefore has focused strongly on developing automated and non-invasive sensor-based methods to increase data acquisition speed, enhance measurement accuracy and objectivity and to reduce labor costs. While many 2D methods based on image processing have been proposed for field phenotyping, only a few 3D solutions are found in the literature. A track-driven vehicle consisting of a camera system, a real-time-kinematic GPS system for positioning, as well as hardware for vehicle control, image storage and acquisition is used to visually capture a whole vine row canopy with georeferenced RGB images. In the first post-processing step, these images were used within a multi-view-stereo software to reconstruct a textured 3D point cloud of the whole grapevine row. A classification algorithm is then used in the second step to automatically classify the raw point cloud data into the semantic plant components, grape bunches and canopy. In the third step, phenotypic data for the semantic objects is gathered using the classification results obtaining the quantity of grape bunches, berries and the berry diameter.

Yield estimation and forecasting are of special interest in the field of grapevine breeding and viticulture. The number of harvested berries per plant is strongly correlated with the resulting quality. Therefore, early yield forecasting can enable a focused thinning of berries to ensure a high quality end product. Traditionally yield estimation is done by extrapolating from a small sample size and by utilizing historic data. Moreover, it needs to be carried out by skilled experts with much experience in this field. Berry detection in images offers a cheap, fast and non-invasive alternative to the otherwise time-consuming and subjective on-site analysis by experts. We apply fully convolutional neural networks on images acquired with the Phenoliner, a field phenotyping platform. We count single berries in images to avoid the error-prone detection of grapevine clusters. Clusters are often overlapping and can vary a lot in the size which makes the reliable detection of them difficult. We address especially the detection of white grapes directly in the vineyard. The detection of single berries is formulated as a classification task with three classes, namely 'berry', 'edge' and 'background'. A connected component algorithm is applied to determine the number of berries in one image. We compare the automatically counted number of berries with the manually detected berries in 60 images showing Riesling plants in vertical shoot positioned trellis (VSP) and semi minimal pruned hedges (SMPH). We are able to detect berries correctly within the VSP system with an accuracy of 94.0 % and for the SMPH system with 85.6 %.

In grapevine research the acquisition of phenotypic data is largely restricted to the field due to its perennial nature and size. The methodologies used to assess morphological traits and phenology are mainly limited to visual scoring. Some measurements for biotic and abiotic stress, as well as for quality assessments, are done by invasive measures. The new evolving sensor technologies provide the opportunity to perform non-destructive evaluations of phenotypic traits using different field phenotyping platforms. One of the biggest technical challenges for field phenotyping of grapevines are the varying light conditions and the background. In the present study the Phenoliner is presented, which represents a novel type of a robust field phenotyping platform. The vehicle is based on a grape harvester following the concept of a moveable tunnel. The tunnel it is equipped with different sensor systems (RGB and NIR camera system, hyperspectral camera, RTK-GPS, orientation sensor) and an artificial broadband light source. It is independent from external light conditions and in combination with artificial background, the Phenoliner enables standardised acquisition of high-quality, geo-referenced sensor data.

Grapevine leafroll disease (GLD) is considered one of the most widespread grapevine virus diseases, causing severe economic losses worldwide. To date, six grapevine leafroll-associated viruses (GLRaVs) are known as causal agents of the disease, of which GLRaV-1 and -3 induce the strongest symptoms. Due to the lack of efficient curative treatments in the vineyard, identification of infected plants and subsequent uprooting is crucial to reduce the spread of this disease. Ground-based hyperspectral imaging (400–2500 nm) was used in this study in order to identify white and red grapevine plants infected with GLRaV-1 or -3. Disease detection models have been successfully developed for greenhouse plants discriminating symptomatic, asymptomatic, and healthy plants. Furthermore, field tests conducted over three consecutive years showed high detection rates for symptomatic white and red cultivars, respectively. The most important detection wavelengths were used to simulate a multispectral system that achieved classification accuracies comparable to the hyperspectral approach. Although differentiation of asymptomatic and healthy field-grown grapevines showed promising results further investigations are needed to improve classification accuracy. Symptoms caused by GLRaV-1 and -3 could be differentiated.
