The deep-sea environments of the South Atlantic Ocean are less studied in comparison to the North Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. With the aim of identifying the deep-sea bacteria in this less known ocean, 70 strains were isolated from eight sediment samples (depth range between 1905 to 5560 m) collected in the eastern part of the South Atlantic, from the equatorial region to the Cape Abyssal Plain, using three different culture media. The strains were classified into three phylogenetic groups, Gammaproteobacteria, Firmicutes and Actinobacteria, by the analysis of 16s rRNA gene sequences. Gammaproteobacteria and Firmicutes were the most frequently identified groups, with Halomonas the most frequent genus among the strains. Microorganisms belonging to Firmicutes were the only ones observed in all samples. Sixteen of the 41 identified operational taxonomic units probably represent new species. The presence of potentially new species reinforces the need for new studies in the deep-sea environments of the South Atlantic.Electronic supplementary materialThe online version of this article (doi:10.1186/2193-1801-2-127) contains supplementary material, which is available to authorized users.
Exploring genetic variation in Gossypium arboreum L. germplasm is useful as it contains many important genes conferring resistance to different stresses. In limited earlier studies, low level of genetic diversity was found by using conventional DNA marker systems which may impede future genome mapping studies. In the present investigation, we explored the extent of Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNP) among 30 conserved regions of Expressed Sequence Tags (EST) of low copy genes between two genotypes of G. arboreum. A total of 27 SNPs including 21 substitutions and 6 Insertions and deletions (Indels) in 7804 bp were found between these genotypes with a frequency of one SNP per 371 bp and one Indel after every 1300 bp. Out of these SNPs, 52% were transitions, whilst 48% SNPs were transversion. In conclusion, SNPs are expedient markers that can explore polymorphism in highly conserved sequences where other markers are not effective.
Bacillus stratosphericus LAMA 585 was isolated from the Mid-Atlantic-Ridge seafloor (5,500-m depth). This bacterium presents the capacity for cellulase, xylanase, and lipase production when growing aerobically in marine-broth media. Genes involved in the tolerance of oligotrophic and extreme conditions and prospection of biotechnological products were annotated in the draft genome (3.7 Mb).
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations–citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
