The Anthracnose, caused by Colletotrichum lindemuthianum (Sacc. and Magnus) Briosi and Cavara, is one of the most importante fungal disease of common bean. Several strategies have been used for its control, such as the use of pathogen-free seeds, chemical control and crop rotation. However, the most efficient method to control this disease is the use of resistant cultivars. Previous studies conducted by the Laboratory of Common Bean Breeding and Molecular Biology of the Nucleus of Research Applied to Agriculture (Laboratório de Melhoramento de Feijão Comum e de Biologia Molecular do Núcleo de Pesquisa Aplicada à Agricultura-NUPAGRI) revealed that the Andean cultivar Amendoim Cavalo is resistant to races 2, 7, 9, 19, 23, 39, 55, 65, 73, 89, 1545, 2047 and 3481 of C. lindemuthianum. The objective of this work was to characterize the genetic resistance to anthracnose in Amendoim Cavalo using inheritance and allelism tests. The results of inheritance tests in F2 generation of Amendoim Cavalo × PI 207262 cross, inoculated with 2047 race, fitted in a ratio of 3R:1S, proving the action of a single dominant gene in Amendoim Cavalo cultivar. Allelism tests demonstrated that the dominant gene present in Amendoim Cavalo is independent from the genes previously characterized. The authors propose the Co-AC symbol to designate the new resistant gene to C. lindemuthianum. The results show high contribution to breeding programs, once Amendoim Cavalo cultivar can be considered an important Andean source of resistance to C. lindemuthianum.

The use of resistant cultivars is considered as one of the most effective methods in controlling this disease. The present study had as aim to characterize the genetic resistance of the Andean common bean cultivar Jalo Pintado 2 to the C. lindemuthianum through inheritance and allelism tests. The experiment was conducted under greenhouse conditions at Laboratório de Melhoramento do Feijão Comum e de Biologia Molecular do Núcleo de Pesquisa Aplicada a Agricultura (Nupagri) at Universidade Estadual de Maringá, Paraná, Brazil. The results of the F2 population from the crossing 'Jalo Pintado 2' (R) × Cornell 49-242 (S), inoculated with race 73 of C. lindemuthianum, adjusted to the ratio of 3R: 1S, demonstrating the action of a dominant gene in the cultivar Jalo Pintado 2. The allelism tests evidenced that the gene in the 'Jalo Pintado 2' is independent from those previously characterized: Co-1, Co-2,Co-3, Co-34, Co-4, Co-42, Co-43, Co-5, Co-6, Co-11, Co-12, Co-13, Co-14, Co-15 and Co-16. This gene is also independent from those genes not yet named present in Paloma, Perla and Amendoim Cavalo cultivars. The authors propose the Co-

"Candidatus Liberibacter solanacearum" (Lso) are phloem-restricted and unculturable Gram-negative bacteria. Presently five haplotypes have been identified worldwide; but only haplotypes A and B are associated with the vector Bactericera cockerelli (Šulc.) in the Americas. Previous studies showed that Lso-infection reduces B. cockerelli reproductive output and that Lso haplotype B is more pathogenic than Lso haplotype A. To understand the interaction of Lso haplotype B and B. cockerelli, the fitness of Lso-free and Lso B-infected insects, and the expression of vitellogenin (BcVg1-like), a gene involved directly in the insect reproduction were analyzed. Statistical differences in the number of eggs oviposited, and the total number of progeny nymphs and adults were found among crosses of insects with or without Lso. Significant differences in sex proportions were found between Lso B-infected and Lso-free crosses: a higher proportion of F adult females were obtained from Lso B-infected mothers. A significant reduction of BcVg1-like was observed in crosses performed with Lso B-infected females compared to the Lso-free insects. In female cohorts of different age, a significant reduction of BcVg1-like expression was measured in 7-d-old Lso B-infected females (virgin and mated) compared with 7-d-old Lso-free females (virgin and mated), respectively. The reduction of BcVg1-like transcript was associated with a lower number of developing oocytes observed in female's reproductive systems. Overall, this study represents the first step to understand the interaction of Lso B with B. cockerelli, highlighting the effect of Lso B infection on egg production, BcVg1-like expression, and oocyte development.

The vegetable diseases transmitted represents a major public health problem, because it is estimated that millions of people worldwide are affected by parasites. This study aimed to quantify and identify the rate of contamination by helminth eggs on vegetables like watercress and endive marketed in four major supermarkets of Apucarana (PR). Were analyzed 128 sample of vegetables being: 64 of chicory and 64 of watercress, which were trimmer, weighed and washed in a tryptose lauryl sulfate 1% solution. There was a high rate of contamination in both varieties studied, with higher prevalence of chicory. Were found eggs of Ancylostoma sp., Ascaris sp. Diphilobotrium sp. Dipylidium sp. Hymenolepis sp. Taenia sp. and Enterobius sp. Considering these results, we stress the urgent need for official oversight and regulation by the competent local authorities in order to improve the hygienic quality of vegetables offered to the population, and minimize the rates of parasitic infections in adults and children (the most affected). O presente estudo teve por objetivo quantificar e identificar o índice de contaminação por ovos de helmintos em hortaliças do tipo agrião e almeirão comercializadas em quatro grandes supermercados da cidade de Apucarana (PR). Foram analisadas 128 amostras de hortaliças sendo 64 de almeirão e 64 de agrião. As hortaliças foram desfolhadas, pesadas e lavadas em solução lauril sulfato triptose a 1%. Observouse um índice elevado de contaminação nas duas variedades estudadas, com maior prevalência no almeirão. Foram encontrados ovos de Ancylostoma sp., Ascaris sp., Diphilobotrium sp., Dipylidium sp., Hymenolepis sp., Taenia sp. e Enterobius sp. Considerando esses resultados, salienta-se a necessidade urgente de fiscalização e regulamentação oficial por parte das autoridades locais competentes, a fim de melhorar a qualidade higiênico-sanitária das hortaliças ofertadas à população e minimizar os índices de parasitoses em adultos e crianças (as mais afetadas). Brazil is one of the world's largest producers of citrus. However, production is challenged due to biotic and abiotic factors limiting crop health. The aim of this work was to evaluate the influence of water deficit in sweet orange (Citrus sinensis) cv. Pera Bianchi inoculated with citrus tristeza virus (CTV). Two isolates of CTV were used, one causing severe symptoms (Forte Rolândia) and the second causing mild symptoms (Pêra IAC), grafted on Rangpur lime (Citrus limonia) and Swingle citrumelo [Citrus paradisi x Poncirus trifoliata], and the indicator sweet orange Pêra Bianchi, free of virus, and healthy controls containing only the indicator budwood. The water regime for the plants was field capacity or 50% field capacity. After five months of controlled irrigation, biochemical variables were measured (protein, proline content and catalase activity), and real-time RT-PCR amplification of the virus was performed for detection and quantification of viral titer. Differences were observed in the total protein content and proline, with greater accumulation in plants maintained under water deficit. There was no effect of drought on the population of viral isolates, but the plants held at field capacity and inoculated with the severe isolate had a higher viral titer.
