O artigo tem como propósito demonstrar que os empreendimentos econômicos situados no campo da Economia Solidária, por basearem-se na livre associação, na cooperação produtiva e na autogestão, adotam uma racionalidade distinta à tipicamente capitalista, justificando com isso uma revisão do conceito de empreendedorismo, em particular se aplicado a organizações de pequeno porte. O amparo teórico de tais argumentos é construído a partir de clássicos como Schumpeter, Polanyi e Weber, ao lado de autores de referência sobre a Economia Solidária e o microempreendedorismo, como Laville, Portela e Hespanha. As bases empíricas provêm de estudos realizados sobre os dados do Mapeamento Nacional da Economia Solidária, somados aos resultados de uma investigação qualitativa sobre microempreendimentos associativos, aos quais se aplicou uma análise centrada em aspectos de autogestão e cooperação e em aspectos de eficiência e viabilidade. Não obstante suas debilidades e limites, as experiências estudadas refletem a existência de um empreendedorismo tipicamente associativo, instituindo uma lógica de desenvolvimento orientada por objetivos simultaneamente econômicos e sociais, irredutível àquela das empresas convencionais com finalidade de lucro. Conclui-se pela existência de fundamentos empíricos consistentes para que se proceda a uma abordagem teórico-conceitual específica sobre o empreendedorismo, tal como se apresenta ou deve ser visto no contexto da Economia Solidária e, sob certos aspectos, no contexto mais amplo das pequenas empresas.

A s considerações apresentadas neste artigo traduzem alguns dos resultados do projeto de pesquisa Microempreendedorismo e Associativismo em Países de Desenvolvimento Periférico, desenvolvido em parceria entre o Programa de Pós-Graduação em Ciências Sociais da Universidade do Vale do Rio dos Sinos (Unisinos, São Leopoldo/RS), o Centro de Estudos Sociais (CES, Coimbra) e o Cruzeiro do Sul-Instituto de Investigação para o Desenvolvimento José Negrão (ICS, Maputo). O objeto focalizado pela pesquisa diz respeito ao empreendedorismo praticado por trabalhadores associados em pequena escala, formalmente ou tacitamente, no tocante às peculiaridades das organizações econômicas correspondentes e ao modo como a associação e a cooperação modelam e potencializam a gestão empreendedora. 1 208
