The volcanic island of Trindade is located 620 miles from the coast of Espirito Santo State, Brazil. This island together with the Martin Vaz Archipelago, are the only visible portions of the Vitoria-Trindade submarine ridge. The benthic flora of this region is poorly known. Of the 17 Chlorophyta, 11 Phaeophyta and 35 Rhodophyta identified (total of 63 taxa), the majority are newly cited for the region (15 Chlorophyta, 10 Phaeophyta, 34 Rhodophyta). The most common orders are Caulerpales (Chlorophyta), Dictyotales (Phaeophyta) and Ceramiales (Rhodophyta).
The conservation of natural areas and the Ecotourism The role of sustainable tourism and ecotourism in protected areas will become of increased importance for the preparation of upcoming events like the Football World Cup and Olympic Games. Therefore, specific understanding of Conservation Biology should contribute to the management of environmental tourism. To address these issues, some important aspects of Conservation Biology in global and regional scales are contextualized. This paper discusses the concepts of “biodiversity”, “common and rare species”, “minimum viable population”, the need for large natural areas for some organisms, as well as other aspects that make Conservation of Nature one of the most important issues for humanity today. Ecological restoration through conventional plantation techniques can create forests with low biodiversity. As such, one way to overcome possible shortcomings of the restoration process is to use nucleation techniques, such as artificial perches. These structures attract the avifauna and increase the deposition of seeds associated with feces or bird regurgitation. Seed rain and seedlings regeneration were monitored under artificial perches and control areas in a degraded area of Rio de Janeiro, RJ, Brazil. In this study, 46 morphospecies of seeds were identified. Under the perches, greater abundance and richness of seeds were found with certain ecological and functional traits that support the role of artificial perches as a biological diversity core. Seedling establishment was low under the perches and control areas. This suggests that integrated actions to improve soil conditions should be applied to enhance seedling establishment.
The human pressures are transforming the landscape into isolated patches of forest remnants, which enhances the edge effects. The aim of this study was to evaluate effects on beetles in a stretch of slope Atlantic Forest. Were collected monthly from May 2008 to April 2009, with no bait pitfall traps at six transects hillside above the road at distances of 5, 30, 60 and 100 m, Tijuca National Park -RJ. The material was sorted (over 2mm) and identified the families, with their respective trophic groups. We recorded 7449 individuals from 17 families and six unidentified morphospecies. The families were the most abundant Staphylinidae, Nitidulidae, Scarabaeidae and Scolytidae. Staphylinidae was the most abundant, therefore the group of carnivores, too. The most abundant families dictated the distribution of trophic groups throughout the year. There was no significant difference between the distances, both for families and for the trophic groups, and found a pattern in the grouping of the sites. The data may be constrained by environmental heterogeneity, or there is a clear pattern because of the taxonomic level examined. There is a distinct distribution for each family, seasonally. Trophic groups present their answers regarding the most abundant families. It is suggested that the responses are being ...
