The global increase in the demand for and production of animal-source foods (four-to five-fold increase between 1960 and 2015), which has been mostly concentrated in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC), provides smallholder livestock producers with an opportunity for improving their livelihoods and food and nutrition security. However, across livestock production systems in many LMIC, limited supplies and high cost of good quality feed severely constrains exploitation of this opportunity. In many of such countries, feeds and feeding-related issues are often ranked as the primary constraint to livestock production and increased consumption of animal-source foods. Here we review the complex biophysical, socio-economic and technological challenges related to improving quality feed supply and the reasons for generally low adoption of apparently proven feed enhancement technologies. We describe also successful interventions and conclude by recommending strategies for improving quality feed supply in LMIC that account for and overcome the prevailing challenges.
This study examined the impact of climate change on pastoral livestock in Boulgou Province located in the sub-humid zone of Burkina Faso. We analysed the annual rainfall and temperature data from 1980 to 2012 using both Mann-Kendall's statistical test to show the long-term annual trends and Standardised Anomaly Index (SAI) to evaluate inter-annual rainfall fluctuations. We also conducted household interviews with 248 respondents to analyse agro-pastoralists' perceptions of climate change and variability, its impacts on livestock production and their acceptance of adaptation measures. A binary regression model was employed to identify the most important factors affecting agro-pastoralists' decisions to adopt specific adaptation measures. Within the period of study, the annual rainfall showed an upward trend, with high inter-annual variability and 818.9 mm of mean annual rainfall. Additionally, the annual minimum and maximum temperatures showed a statistically significant upward trend, with a rate of change of 0.20°C and 0.27°C per decade. The results of the household interviews indicated that most of the respondents (73.4 %) observed temperature changes compared with rainfall amount (1.2 %). To adapt to these changes, they have already adopted some adaptation measures that include the use of crop residue and herd destocking. Other less popular but innovative adaptation measures such as haymaking and use of concentrate livestock feeds could be promoted effectively under a comprehensive climate change adaptation action plan within a reviewed National Policy for Sustainable Livestock Development. This case study is one of the platforms through which poor agro-pastoralists' perception and recommendations can be accommodated in this proposed multi-stakeholder policy review.
Use of local feed resources in the farmers' ram fattening scheme: technical and economical performanceThe ram-fattening scheme in Burkina Faso is currently feed-intensive using material from outside farms, such as cotton cake. In Sahelian Burkina, the high cost of this feed impedes a wide adoption of this fattening technique. Locally available feed resources such as Piliostigma reticulatum (Pr) and Acacia raddiana (Ar) are potential alternatives to cotton cake (Cc). This study aims at developing feeding strategies that incorporate local resources to partially substitute for cotton cake and identifying technically and economically efficient rations for extension. Five feed rations were allocated to 45 rams from 15 farmers. Technical and economic data were collected for performance evaluation. The results suggest that rations with 20% Ar + 20% Cc, 10% Ar + 30% Cc and 10% Pr + 30% Cc perform better technically and economically than the control consisting only of 40% Cc. Local feed resources can thus be used to partially replace cotton cake. However, the type of local feed and its level of substitution will require particular attention.
