No abstract

A list of species of Rutelinae from Bahia state, Northeastern Brazil, is presented. The list is based on specimens deposited in Brazilian collections. The list includes 4 tribes, 23 genera, 101 species and 17 subspecies. The genera Byrsopolis Burmeister, 1844, Pseudodorysthetus Soula, 2008 and Trizogeniates Ohaus, 1917 are recorded for the first time in Bahia and Northeastern Brazil. Thirty species are newly recorded in Bahia: Areoda espiritosantensis Ohaus, 1905, B. laticollis Burmeister, 1855, Bolax flavolineata (Mannerheim, 1829), Chlorota abdominalis Ohaus, 1926, C. espiritosantensis Ohaus, 1912, Dorysthetus espiritosantensis Ohaus, 1905, D. fulgidus (Waterhouse, 1881), Leucothyreus acanthurus Ohaus, 1917, L. albopilosus Ohaus, 1917, L. campestris Burmeister, 1855, L. cayapo Ohaus, 1931, L. duplopunctatus Frey, 1976, L. eligius Ohaus, 1918, L. fluminensis Ohaus, 1918, L. iridipennis Ohaus, 1917, L. lucipetens Ohaus, 1931, L. occipitalis Ohaus, 1931, L. pallefactus Ohaus, 1924, L. paulista Ohaus, 1917, L. punctulatus Blanchard, 1851, L. suturalis Laporte, 1840, L. trochantericus Ohaus, 1917, L. verticalis Ohaus, 1924, Macraspis cincta (Drury, 1872), Paranomala tricostulata (Ohaus, 1897), P. violacea (Burmeister, 1844), Pseudodorysthetus calcaratus (Spinola, 1835), and Trizogeniates planipennis Ohaus, 1917. Pelidnota unicolor unicolor (Drury, 1778) is recorded for the first time in Bahia. Fourteen species are identified and will be described in subsequent papers: 10 of Leucothyreus MacLeay, 1819, 2 of Lobogeniates Ohaus, 1917 and 1 species of Byrsopolis Burmeister, 1844 and Pelidnota MacLeay, 1819. Rutelini is the richest tribe with 16 genera and 49 species. The information presented in the list generates an important set of knowledge regarding the diversity of Rutelinae of Bahia and Brazil and provides the basis for conducting future research within the group.

The taxonomic status and the geographic distribution of two species, Pelidnota gounellei (Ohaus, 1908) and P. ludovici Ohaus, 1905, is revised and the species are revalidated. A lectotype for Pelidnota tricolor Nonfried, 1894 is designated. The taxonomy of the species is briefly discussed, and a distribution map for the reviewed species is also provided. The distribution range of P. gounellei is expanded to the Minas Gerais state, Brazil.

The use of high-resolution images in studies of morphology, taxonomy and systematics has been increasingly frequent, especially in Insecta. However, suitable lighting systems are still very expensive and/or difficult to use. On the other hand, currently the use of 3D printers has helped to make lighting equipment more accessible for researchers to equip their laboratories. Here we present a low-cost circular LED dome lighting system for capturing scientific micro and macro photography on a self-assembly stereomicroscope. We also present the necessary components for making the dome, as well as the elements used to capture the photographs.

Species of Cerambycidae were inventoried in an area of Caatinga (dryland)

Seven new species of Trizogeniates Ohaus, 1917 (Coleoptera: Scarabaeidae: Rutelinae: Geniatini) from Brazil are described: Trizogeniates beckeri new species, T. curvatus new species, T. eliskae new species, T. hallensorum new species, T. spatulatus new species, T. vazdemelloi new species, and T. zuzanae new species. The male of T. eris Villatoro, 2002 is described for the first time. The diagnostic features of the seven new species and the male of T. eris are presented and compared with their congeners. Illustrations of specimens, mouthparts, and male genitalia of the new species and T. eris are also provided. Additionally, an identification key and an illustrated catalogue with the geographic distribution of the Brazilian species of Trizogeniates are presented. New Brazilian state records for 12 species are depicted: T. cribricollis (Lucas, 1859) from Pará, Mato Grosso do Sul, and Paraná; T. dispar (Burmeister, 1844) from Espírito Santo; T. eris from Rio de Janeiro; T. goyanus Ohaus, 1917 from Mato Grosso do Sul; T. laevis (Camerano, 1878) and T. montanus Ohaus, 1917 from Espírito Santo and Paraná; T. temporalis Ohaus, 1917 from Goiás; T. terricolus Ohaus, 1917 and T. vittatus (Lucas, 1859) from Paraná; and T. traubi Martínez, 1965 from Pará, Minas Gerais, and São Paulo. Finally, distributional maps for the Brazilian species are included.

This paper provided a list of all new Brazilian Hexapoda species described in 2020. Furthermore, based on the information extracted by this list, we tackled additional questions regarding the taxa, the specialists involved in the species descriptions as well as the journals in which those papers have been published. We recorded a total of 680 new Brazilian species of Hexapoda described in 2020, classified in 245 genera, 112 families and 18 orders. These 680 species were published in a total of 2019 articles comprising 423 different authors residing in 27 countries. Only 30% of these authors are women, which demonstrates an inequality regarding sexes. In relation to the number of authors by species, the majority of the new species had two authors and the maximum of authors by species was five. We also found inequalities in the production of described species regarding the regions of Brazil, with Southeast and South leading. The top 10 institutions regarding productions of new species have four in the Southeast, two at South and with one at North Region being the outlier of this pattern. Out of the total 219 published articles, Zootaxa dominated with 322 described species in 95 articles. The average impact factor was of 1.4 with only seven articles being published in Impact Factors above 3, indicating a hardship on publishing taxonomic articles in high-impact journals. The highlight of this paper is that it is unprecedent, as no annual record of Hexapoda species described was ever made in previous years to Brazil.

This contribution is an update catalogue of the type specimens of Insecta deposited in the entomological collection Prof. Johann Becker of the Museum of Zoology of Universidade Estadual de Feira de Santana, Bahia, Brazil. A list of 206 holtypes and 1,430 paratypes of 23 families, 73 genera, and 244 species allocated in 12 orders. Lectotype and paralectotypes of Bitoma palmarum Bondar, 1940 were designated. Diptera present the highest number of types on the collection, with 161 holotypes and 1,324 paratypes.
