The polyetiological syndrome of disseminated intravascular coagulation (DIC) is characterized by changes in patients’ hemostasis. The aim of the current research was to elucidate the main factors for the development of DIC syndrome during canine babesiosis, and to assess their correlation level. Dogs included in this study were of various breeds and sex, weighing 10-40 kg and aged 2-7 years. They were separated in two groups (n=50) according to their diagnosis to babesiosis. Oscillometry (blood pressure, pulse rate), vascular-platelet hemostasis, coagulogram, hematological, biochemical (fibrinogen, fibrin degradation product, soluble fibrin-monomer complex) and hemodynamic (circulating blood volume) assessment methods were used. The group of dogs positive on Babesia spp., had clear manifestation of DIC with 5-7% of the erythrocyte population being affected. DIC was manifested by a significant increase in soluble fibrin-monomer complex and fibrin degradation product (p<0.001), hypofibrinogenemia (p<0.001), thrombocytopenia (p<0.001), and an increase in indicators of spontaneous aggregation ability of platelets and red blood cells (p<0.001). Significant hemodynamic disorders were observed: a decrease in circulating blood volume, circulating erythrocytes volume (p<0.05), specific circulating blood volume and hematocrit value (p<0.001). The average blood pressure was reduced (p<0.001), and the Allgöwer’s shock index was increased 2 times (p<0.05). A shock of II degree (medium, subcompensated) was confirmed. Therefore, it can be concluded that acute spontaneous dogs’ babesiosis can be characterized by the occurrence of DIC in a consumption coagulopathy form, and shock of II degree. This condition renders the patients for emergency admission.
The article investigates into the species composition of agents causing gastrointestinal tract nematodes in sheep. It determines the forms of nematodes communities. For this purpose, 710 sheep were examined, 79.58% of which were infected. The fauna of nematodes was represented by 15 species of helminths from 12 genera: Bunostomum, Oesophagostomum, Nematodirus, Chabertia, Cooperia, Trichostrongylus, Ostertagia, Haemonchus, Тrichuris, Aonchotheca, Strongyloides, and Skrjabinema. The indicators of infestation intensity in sheep ranged from 1 to 93 specimens per animal, and the abundance index ranged from 0.01 to 16.96 specimens per animal. The most common nematodes are H. contortus (prevalence, 61.97%), O. circumcincta (59.58%), T. colubriformis (57.35%), Т. оvis (55.21%), N. spathiger (49.01%), Oe. venulosum (42.54%), S. ovis (41.13%), Ch. оvina (36.76%), and T. skrjabini (26.34%). Gastrointestinal nematodes in the body of 99.12% of the infected sheep proceeded as parasitic communities. Most frequently, coinvasions were represented by parasitic communities which consisted of five (prevalence, 14.51%), six (19.44%), or seven (15.92%) species. The study revealed 361 varieties of mixed coinvasions. The most frequent comembers were H. contortus, O. circumcincta, T. colubriformis, Т. оvis, N. spathiger, S. ovis, and Ch. оvina. The data obtained provide an opportunity to increase the effectiveness of measures to combat and prevent gastrointestinal tract nematodes in sheep farms.
Babesiosis is a common disease in dogs. Babesia canis (Piana & Galli-Valerio, 1895) (Sporozoa, Babesiidae) causes the destruction of erythrocytes, resulting in hypotensive shock and total tissue damage due to lack of oxygen. Because of babesiosis, anemia develops in dogs, and in the first hours of the disease it is normocytic, normochromic and nonregenerative, and on the 2–3rd day of the course, macrocytic, hypochromic anemia with reticulocytosis develops. Scientists have studied the most common indicators of evaluation of erythrocytopoesis during babesiosis (the number of red blood cells, hemoglobin, hematocrit index, indices of “red” blood MCH and MCV), but the age structure of erythrocytes, their acid resistance and the ferrum-transferrin complex for this parasitic pathology have not been sufficiently studied. We carried out research on dogs of service breeds, which were divided into two groups: the first (6–18 months old, n = 10) and the second (2–8 years, n = 15). According to the conducted studies, in dogs of different age groups with babesiosis revealed oligocythemia with anisocytosis and poikilocytosis, oligochromia, decreased hematocrit index and macrocytosis. Significant changes in the morpho-functional state of erythrocytes in dogs of both groups have been revealed, in particular, changes in the population (age) composition of red blood cells: the number of “old” erythrocytes increases (they are rapidly destroyed), the “young” forms of red blood cells decrease and the time for their hemolysis is reduced. As a result of the study of the ferrum-transferrin complex in dogs with babesiosis in both groups, an increase in the level of free ferrum (UIBC) and a decrease in the saturation of transferrin with the trace element was found, which makes it impossible to form a hemoglobin molecule in the bone marrow.
Trichuris vulpis and Toxocara canis are worldwide parasitic nematodes affecting dogs and mammals of the Canine family. Due to the special structure of the shells, the eggs of these geohelminths can maintain their viability in soil, sand, water and the environment for a long time. The study involved young (6–12 months old) and adult (1.5–8.0 years old) dogs affected by co-infection of T. vulpis + T. canis; the control group consisted of dewormed healthy animals of the same age. Parasitological examination of dogs' faeces was performed using a "Counting Chamber for Ovoscopic Researches"; morphological parameters, indicators of nutrient metabolism, mineral metabolism and activity of enzymatic systems were determined in blood and serum. According to the results of parasitological research on the dogs, it was found that young animals are more prone to toxocarosis, and adults – trichurosis. The co-infection of nematodes T. vulpis + T. canis in dogs develops several changes in haematological parameters: a significant decrease in erythrocytes, haemoglobin, MCV, MCH, and haematocrit, leukocytosis with basophils and eosinophilia in young infected animals; and eosinophilia and basophilia (15.9 times) in adults, compared with healthy dogs of the same age. Among the changes in serum biochemical parameters, young infected dogs showed a decrease in the concentration of total protein and albumin content, an increase in the content of "acute phase" proteins (α-1, α-2 and β-globulins), an increase in cholesterol and total bilirubin; in adult infected dogs, a decrease in albumin content, an increase in the content of α-1, α-2, and β-globulins, an increase in the concentration of cholesterol and total bilirubin, a decrease in the concentration of urea in comparison with healthy animals were determined. Also, among the indicators of mineral metabolism, a decrease in the concentration of calcium and magnesium in the serum was found in young infected dogs. Among the changes in the enzyme metabolism in the serum of infected dogs, there was an increase in the activity of all studied enzymes in animals of both research groups: ALT, AST, α-amylase, GGT and ALP. Thus, co-infection with nematodes T. vulpis + T. canis has a complex pathogenic effect on the body of dogs of all ages, which manifested itself in multiple changes in haematological parameters. In the future, the authors’ team plan to develop comprehensive measures to combat nematode infections in different living conditions of dogs, taking into account the results of the current research.
Nematodoses of the sheep’s digestive tract is distributed both in Ukraine and abroad. Pathogens of these diseases in the form of monoinvasions, as well as associative with other invasive diseases, cause sheep farms considerable economic losses. Systematic monitoring studies that are carried out to establish a helminthofauna specific to a particular region are a key to successful control of parasitic diseases. Information on the species composition of pathogens causing invasive diseases in animals in the territory of a certain region, allows us to conduct scientifically based selection of drugs and to conduct effective, cost-based treatment and prevention measures. Therefore, the purpose of our research was to establish the distribution of nematodoses of the digestive canal of sheep and their peculiarities in the conditions of sheep farms in the territory of the Kyiv region (Central region of Ukraine). The research was conducted in conditions of sheep farms in the Kyiv region (Baryshivka, Bila Tserkva, Zghurivka, Pereiaslav-Khmelnytskyi, Skvyra, Tarashcha, Fastiv and Yahotyn districts). Helminthoscopy of fecal samples was performed using the McMaster’s method. As a result of scatoscopy diagnostics of sheep, a considerable distribution of nematodoses of the digestive canal was established on the territory of the Kyiv region (the severity of the invasion was 48.79 %). According to the morphological features of eggs isolated from faeces of sick animals, parasitization of nematodes from three sequences was established: Strongylata (38.98 %), Trichocephalata (33.36 %), and Rhabditata (27.66 %). It was registered that the sheep farming of the Bila Tserkva, Yahotyn and Zghurivka districts (EI – 61.49, 59.73 and 54.17 % respectively) were the most unfavorable for nematodoses of the digestive tract. The disease was registered in the form of both mono- and mixinvasions. The associative course of diseases (75.03 % of the total number of diseased animals) was dominant with two-, three-, four-, and five-component associations of sheep parasite pathogens (47.63, 35.47, 11.50 and 5.40 % in accordance). It has been established that nematodoses of the digestive canal of sheep (strongylates of the digestive canal, strongyloides and trichiuruses) are in the composition of mixinvasions, the sympathizers of which are: eimeries, moniezies, and melofagoses in various combinations. The abundance of Capillaria obsignata Madsen, 1945, the causative agent of chicken capillariasis, was studied in the central region of Ukraine. Differential morphometric characters are determined for adult males and females of C. obsignata. The species-specific variability of its morphological parameters is characterized. New data is received on the meristic characters of C. obsignata eggs extracted from different substrates. The stages of embryonic development are determined in laboratory cultures of these nematodes, taking into account their meristic and morphological changes. Capillaria obsignata parasites are very common at the poultry farms of Poltava and Kyiv regions of Ukraine. Their abundance index is 3.4, and the intensity of infection varies from 3 to 317 specimens. Differential morphometric species-specific characters of adult C. obsignata males are the shape and size of the pseudobursa, spicule, spicule sheath. Adult females of the species can be identified by the shape and size of the vulva, the distance from the esophagus end to the vulva, and the length of the vagina. The meristic characters of nematode eggs, though typical for the species, may change depending on the sampled substrate. The parasite’s embryonic development involves five morphologically and meristically different stages. The invasive larvae of this species developed in the eggs before the 12th day of culturing in laboratory conditions at 25 °С. The invasive larvae’s viability was 90.3 ± 1.5%.
Gastrointestinal nematodes are prevalent among dogs in Ukraine and most other countries. Economic losses in dog breeding for invasive diseases are diffi cult to calculate in material terms, but they are clearly manifested in terms of animal health. Therefore, the purpose of the research was to fi nd out the epizootic situation regarding the nematodes of the gastrointestinal tract in dogs of diff erent age, sex and breed groups in the Belotserkovsky district of Kyiv region. The studies were conducted on the territory of single-sector private sector farms of 15 settlements of Belotserkovsky district and on the territories of shelters for homeless animals of Belaya Tserkov. Koprovoskopichesky researches were carried out by the combined method standardized by Kotelnikov - Hrenov. According to the results of coprovoscopy of samples from dogs of the Belotserkovsky area, a signifi cant spread of nematodes of the gastrointestinal canal was established (EI was 50.18%). Eggs of such nematodes as Trichuris vulpis, Toxocara canis, Ancylostoma caninum, Toxascaris leonina, Strongyloides stercoralis were isolated. Diseases were recorded in the form of mono-invasions, among which the largest proportion of the aff ected were trihuriza (27.11%), toxocariasis (6.59), ankylostomosis (1.83%), and myxinvasions, which again led the trichuris. Animals from birth to 7 years were most aff ected. In terms of gender, females were more vulnerable. The highest incidence of invasion was among outbred dogs (51.56%). Most dogs in this group are aff ected by trichuris (54.55%) and myxinvasia (29.29%), which also included T. vulpis. Breeds German Shepherd, Dachshund, Russian Spaniel had the highest percentage of nematode infestations among all studied breeds. The leader among pathogens was T. vulpis, which covered more than half (52.63%) of rocks, myxinvasions were 28.94%, which included T. vulpis. The breeds of the Belgian shepherd, shih-tzu, Russian-European chamomile, alabai were resistant.
