Este artigo apresenta os resultados de uma investigação que teve como questão de pesquisa: Os estudantes que escolhem corretamente as operações em questões que envolvem números naturais conseguem ter a mesma capacidade em questões que envolvem números decimais em questões do campo multiplicativo? Diante dessa questão, o objetivo do estudo foi investigar como se comporta o percentual de acerto da escolha da operação em questões multiplicativas com números decimais quando há a escolha correta da operação em questões multiplicativas com números naturais. A produção das informações ocorreu por meio de um teste aplicado à 109 estudantes de cinco turmas de três escolas públicas situadas na cidade de Confresa, no estado de Mato Grosso, Brasil. O teste continha questões multiplicativas que envolviam números naturais e números decimais com estruturas similares, divididas em questões do tipo aritmético e do tipo algébrico. Os dados obtidos pelos testes compostos por questões multiplicativas aritméticas e questões multiplicativas algébricas com números naturais e números decimais indicaram altos percentuais de acerto da escolha da operação em questões multiplicativas envolvendo números decimais quando ocorreu o aceto da escolha da operação em questões multiplicativas envolvendo números naturais. Além disso, foi possível perceber que o desempenho dos estudantes em questões multiplicativas do tipo aritmético foi melhor em relação à resolução de questões do tipo algébrico.
Durante os estudos de resolução de questões matemáticas, é comum o professor ser indagado por perguntas como: ‘Essa conta é de vezes ou é de dividir?’, ‘Diz que ele dividiu, então é de dividir?’, ‘Está escrito que ela triplicou, então a conta é de multiplicar?’. As respostas dadas pelo professor nem sempre satisfazem a necessidade do estudante. Esse artigo traz os resultados de uma pesquisa de doutoramento em que foram analisadas questões aditivas, questões multiplicativas e questões socioeducacionais. Para esse artigo, foi realizado o recorte para a análise das questões multiplicativas e o objetivo foi analisar se a habilidade de escolha da operação em questões multiplicativas que envolvem números decimais está associada estatisticamente à habilidade de escolha da operação em questões multiplicativas que envolvem números decimais. Para atingir esse objetivo, optou-se pelo uso de testes como instrumento metodológico de pesquisa para nortear a investigação e a análise estatística realizada por meio do teste de associação Qui-Quadrado. Os resultados indicam que se o estudante escolher corretamente a operação em questões multiplicativas com números decimais, tanto aritméticas quanto algébricas, ele tende também a escolher corretamente a operação em questões multiplicativas com números decimais, tanto aritméticas quanto algébricas.
