This study aimed to characterize ocular diseases in dogs naturally affected by visceral leishmaniasis in Teresina, Piauí State, Brazil. The diagnosis was made using parasitological exams of the bone-marrow and lymph-node samples. The main ophthalmological findings were uveitis, conjunctivitis, blepharitis, keratitis, and keratoconjunctivitis sicca. Normocytic normochromic anemia was the main hematological finding, followed by thrombocytopenia. Plasma proteins were also considered, and hyperproteinemia, hypergammaglobulinemia, and hypoalbuminemia were observed. Ocular histopathological examination revealed mild inflammation involving lymphocytes, monocytes, and macrophages. Results indicate the need to perform a differential diagnosis to rule out or establish the presence of Leishmania sp. in dogs presenting with ophthalmic lesions in endemic regions.
Palavras chave: Anestesia, cirurgia, canino, felino Physical state and anesthetic risk in dogs and cats: Review ABSTRACT. Great value has been given to anesthesia since its discovery. A fact that has revolutionized several medical areas, including Veterinary Medicine. In order for anesthesia to be conducted adequately and satisfactorily, a prior evaluation of the patient to be submitted to surgery, such as a review of the clinical history, physical examination, complementary exams and, finally, a risk assessment and physical condition is required. It is important to direct the patient to an anesthetic protocol appropriate to their state of health, as well as to predict the prognosis of the same. This classification of risk and physical status, adopted by the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA), is accepted and used worldwide by human and veterinary doctors, and is widely discussed in scientific works involving anesthesiology, justifying its great importance, being the objective of this review. Keywords: Anesthesia, surgery, canine, feline Estado físico y riesgo anestésico en perros y gatos: Revisión RESUMEN. Palavras-chave: Acupuntura, porco, sedação, subdose, tranquilizante AbstractIn order to tranquilize swine with acepromazine subdose in yin tang acupoint (located in the medium point of a line joined lateral cantus of the eyes in frontal region) was made this study. It was delineated in four steps in different days with five pigs. In first step (S1) acepromazine was administrated at 0.03mg/ kg by intramuscular route. In second step (S2), the same drug was administrated at 0.003mg/kg at same route. In the third step (S3), acepromazine was administrated in yin tang acupoint at same dose utilized in S2. In the last step (S4) acupuncture needle was introduced in yin tang acupoint. Twenty minutes after S1, all animals presented spontaneous decubitus, palpebral ptosis, and sleepiness. In S2, only one animal had spontaneous decubitus and three showed palpebral ptosis, and sleepiness. In S3 all animals had palpebral ptosis, and sleepiness, and four spontaneous decubitus. In S4 occurred spontaneous decubitus, and sleepiness in all animals, two had palpebral ptosis. In conclusion, acepromazine at subdose in yin tang acupoint tranquilizes pigs. The acupuncture needle introduction in yin tang acupoint tranquilizes pigs too, but with technical difficulties because the needle must remain in acupoint for the necessary time.
Palavras-Chave: cães; informação; glândula mamária; profilaxia; proprietário.ABSTRACT -Mammary tumors (MT) are common in dogs, and the etiology may be related to several factors; however the most important factor is hormonal. Due to this, early castration is the main method to prevent the disease in dogs. This study aimed to interview dog guardians in the city of Teresina, about the mammary tumor in dogs. We addressed 420 people in the city and it was observed that most people do not take your pet to the veterinary regularly. Such behavior diminishes the possibility of early diagnosis, key in MT of female dogs. Most people do not accept to spay your animal, demonstrating that they are not willing to adopt important conduits in responsible ownership. Among those who agree with castration, contraception was identified as the main reason for many respondents. The most respondents (71.19%) did not know that dogs may have MT and among the people who claimed to know, most did not know how to prevent the disease. Only 8.24% of people recognize spaying before the first heat as a prophylactic conduct for TM in dogs. Based on these results, it was concluded that the inhabitants of Teresina do not have adequate and sufficient information regarding mammary tumors in dogs. It is suggested the creation of educational campaigns to reduce the morbidity and mortality of the disease in dogs.

Zool. UNIPAR, Umuarama, v. 17, n. 4, p. 233-236, out./dez. 2014. In the experimental treatment (P1), one dog showed moderate tranquilization, and two dogs showed satisfactory tranquilization, without statistical difference from...
About the reason of the euthanasia, 64.60% was sacrificed due to visceral leishmaniosis (calazar), 12.65% due to distemper and 22.89% due to other diseases. It was concluded that the most animals submitted to euthanasia were young, differently of the other countries. Among principal death reasons, it was included also infectious diseases that can be prevented by adequate vaccination.
One herein reports a successful case of celiotomy by plastrotomy for removal of foreign bodies in yellow-footed tortoise (Geochelone denticulata). The animal was treated at the Veterinary Hospital of the Federal University of Piaui, with appetite loss, regurgitation, constipation, lethargy, reluctance to walk and slightly reddish ocular mucous membranes. Radiographic examination was performed, confirming the presence of foreign bodies in the stomach. The tortoise underwent celiotomy by plastrotomy for the removal of the foreign bodies. The opening of the plastron was performed through the abdominal shields, with the aid of a circular mini grinding saw. One performed an incision in the midline between the two abdominal veins to access the abdominal cavity. A gastrotomy for removal of the foreign bodies (nails, toothpicks, stones, pieces of plastic, glass and crockery pieces) was performed after the location of the stomach. The surgery was successful and confirmed with radiographic evaluation in the immediate postoperative period. The celiotomy by plastrotomy for removal of foreign bodies in that animal proved to be a viable, very important and safe technique to the survival of chelonians.
