utilizado na dieta (14,8% de PB) foi a silagem de milho, fornecida na relação volumoso:concentrado 60:40 (%MS). O delineamento experimental utilizado foi o inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial 5 x 2 (grupos genéticos x condição sexual). Os animais não-castrados apresentaram carcaças mais pesadas, com maior rendimento, maior proporção de tecido muscular, porém com espessura de gordura subcutânea semelhante à dos castrados. Os animais da raça Caracu foram mais tardios, com maior deposição de tecido muscular, menor deposição de gordura e menor proporção de traseiro especial quando comparados aos das demais raças. Os animais zebuínos selecionados produziram carcaças mais pesadas que os Nelore não-selecionados. Entre os zebuínos, o maior peso de carcaça quente foi obtido nos animais Nelore selecionados (287 kg), sendo semelhante ao peso registrado para os Caracu (299 kg). Os grupos genéticos Nelore e Gir apresentaram os maiores rendimentos de carcaça quente (57,83; 56,82 e 57,26%, respectivamente). Os maiores comprimentos de carcaça (134 cm) foram obtidos nos animais da raça Caracu e os menores (118,67 cm) nos Nelore não-selecionados. A área de olho-de-lombo foi maior nos animais Caracu que nos zebuínos. Com exceção dos animais Gir, ocorreu o inverso para a gordura subcutânea. A seleção resultou em carcaças mais pesadas na raça Nelore e, quanto à condição sexual, os bovinos não-castrados apresentaram acabamento de gordura de cobertura adequado ao mercado.Palavras-chave: cortes primários, rendimento de carcaça Carcass traits of finishing steers and bulls from different genetic groupsABSTRACT -The objective of this trial was to investigate the physical characteristics of carcasses and primary cuts of 86 steers and bulls averaging 329 kg of body weight and 20 months of age. Twelve Gir, 20 Nellore, 20 Guzerá , and 20 Caracu all from herds that genetically selected for weight gain at 378 days of age and 14 non-genetically improved Nellore (control) were used in this study. Corn silage was used as the forage portion of the diet in a 60:40 (% DM) forage to concentrate ratio. A completely randomized design with a 5 x 2 factorial arrangement of treatments (genetic group and sexual condition) was used. Bulls had carcasses with greater weight, yield, and proportion of muscular tissue but similar subcutaneous fat thickness compared to steers. IntroduçãoA produção de açúcar e álcool gera inúmeros subprodutos de valor econômico, entre eles o bagaço e a ponta de cana-de-açúcar, os quais têm sido objeto de grande interesse como fonte de alimento para os ruminantes. Além disso, o corte da cana coincide com o período de escassez das pastagens e os subprodutos ficam disponíveis na época fria e seca do ano.Os ruminantes ocupam lugar de destaque na agricultura, em face do aproveitamento dos produtos RESUMO -Foram estudadas a composição bromatológica e a conservação de subprodutos da cana-de-açúcar tratados com 0, 1, 2 e 4% (N-amônia na matéria seca) nas formas de amônia anidra, uréia e sulfato de amônio, em arranjo fatorial e delineamento inteiramente casualizado. Não houve alteração no teor de matéria seca do bagaço, em função das fontes de amônia. As fontes de amônia promoveram decréscimo no teor de fibra em detergente neutro do bagaço, entretanto, só com o sulfato de amônia a ponta apresentou tal comportamento. Houve redução no teor de hemicelulose dos subprodutos tratados com uréia, em função dos níveis de amônia. A amonização com sulfato de amônio reduziu o teor de fibra em detergente ácido, principalmente, da ponta. Houve decréscimo no teor de celulose do bagaço tratado com amônia anidra. Os tratamentos resultaram em aumento no teor de proteína bruta de ambos subprodutos, em função dos níveis de amonia. O sulfato de amônio promoveu redução no teor de nitrogênio insolúvel em detergente ácido e maior retenção de nitrogênio nos dois subprodutos. Na maioria dos tratamentos, os períodos após abertura dos silos não alteraram o teor de nitrogênio total dos subprodutos. Os benefícios promovidos pelos tratamentos persistiram até o 48 o dia para o bagaço e até o 24 o dia para a ponta.Palavras-chave: fonte de amônia, nível de amônia, silagem, tratamento químico Effect of Ammoniation on the Composition, Retention and Conservation of SugarCane Bagasse and Tops ABSTRACT -The chemical composition and the preservation of sugar cane byproducts treated with 0, 1, 2 and 4% (N-ammonia in dry matter) using anhydrous ammonia, urea and ammonia sulfate, on a factorial arrangement in a completely randomized design were studied. No alteration was observed in dry matter content of sugar cane bagasse in function of sources of ammonia. The sources of ammonia decreased neutral detergent fiber (NDF) content of sugar cane bagasse, however; only the ammonia sulfate decreased the NDF of sugar cane tops. The hemicellulose content of the byproducts was reduced by urea treatment in function of ammonia levels. The ammoniation with ammonia sulfate decreased the acid detergent fiber content, mainly of sugar cane tops. The cellulose content of bagasse decreased with the anhydrous ammonia treatment. The treatments increased crude protein contents of both byproducts, in function of ammonia levels. RESUMO -Avaliaram-se os efeitos de cinco níveis de concentrado na matéria seca (25,0; 37,5; 50,0; 62,5; e 75,0%) e dois métodos de balanceamentos de rações sobre os pesos dos órgãos, das vísceras e do conteúdo do trato gastrointestinal (CTGI) de 45 bovinos F 1 Limousin x Nelore, com 14 meses de idade e peso vivo médio inicial de 330 kg. O primeiro método de balanceamento tendeu a ser isoprotéico, com aproximadamente 12% de proteína bruta na matéria seca, e o segundo procurou atender às exigências de proteína metabolizável dos animais. Os animais receberam alimentação à vontade até atingir o peso de abate preestabelecido de 500 kg. Foi utilizado o feno de capim-coastcross como fonte de volumoso na dieta. O delineamento foi o inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial 5 x 2, com quatro repetições. Os balanceamentos foram igualmente efetivos, não interagindo com níveis de concentrado. Os pesos do CTGI e omaso diminuíram e os de fígado e gordura interna aumentaram linearmente, com a elevação dos níveis de concentrado. Os demais parâmetros não foram influenciados. Palavras-chave: crescimento, dieta, órgãos e vísceras Concentrate Levels in Diets of Limousin x Nelore Bulls: Internal Organs and DigestiveTract Weight ABSTRACT -An experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of five concentrate levels as dry matter basis (25.0, 37.5, 50.0, 62.5 and 75.0%) and two diet balance methods on the digestive tract, internal organs weight and gastrointestinal fill of 45 crossbred F1 Limousin x Nelore young bulls, averaging 14 months of age and initial live weight of 330 kg. One diet balance method was almost isoprotein with 12% of crude protein and the other was attempted to attend the metabolizable protein requirements of animals. The animals were full fed up to the slaughter weight of 500 kg. The coastcross grass hay was used as roughage source in the diet. A completely randomized design in a 5 x 2 factorial arrangement, with four replicates, was used. The two diet balance methods resulted in equal animal performances and any connect with concentrate levels was found. The gastrointestinal fill and omasum weight decreased and liver and internal fat weight linearly increased as concentrate levels increased. RESUMO -A pesquisa foi conduzida na Fazenda Experimental da EPAMIG-Leopoldina, MG, onde foram avaliados o consumo de capim-elefante, a efetividade da limitação do tempo de pastejo a quatro horas diárias, para manter o consumo próximo à mantença e o ganho de peso de 36 novilhos ¾ Gir-Holandês, em cinco períodos sucessivos de 36 dias, na estação chuvosa. Os tratamentos foram: livre acesso ao pasto (pastejo irrestrito) e pastejo restrito. A disponibilidade de matéria verde seca do capim-elefante nos cinco períodos variou de 4,0 a 7,8 kg/100 kg PV. Os animais com livre acesso ao pasto consumiram o equivalente a 1,61 vezes o dos animais de pastejo restrito e tiveram ganho de peso de corpo vazio médio diário de 516,4 g, com um ganho estimado de 432,5 kg por hectare, estando dentro da faixa de ganho de peso verificada para capim-elefante no Brasil. O consumo de energia metabolizável por unidade de tamanho metabólico manteve-se estável nos três primeiros períodos, elevando-se nos dois últimos períodos, em que ocorreram os maiores ganhos de peso dos animais. Quatro horas diárias de pastejo garantiram consumo próximo à mantença.Palavras-chave: disponibilidade, pastejo irrestrito, pastejo restrito Evaluation of Intake and Weight Gain of Steers in Rotacional Grazing of Elephantgrass(Pennisetum purpureum, Schum.) cv. Napier, during the Rainy Season ABSTRACT -The research was conducted in the experimental farm of the EPAMIG-Leopoldina, MG, to evaluate intake of elephantgrass, the effectiveness of limiting grazing time to four daily hours for keeping intake close to maintenance level, and the weight gain of thirty-six steers during five successive periods of thirty-six days, during the rainy season. The treatments were: free access to pasture (unlimited grazing) and restricted grazing. The availability of green dry matter varied from 4.0 to 7.8 kg/100kg LW. The average daily weight gain of animals with free access to pasture was 516.5 g and their dry matter intake corresponded to 1.61 times that from the restricted grazing ones. The estimated gain per hectare was 423.5 kg, which is within the range reported for elephantgrass in Brasil. Metabolizable energy intake, per unit metabolic size, remained stable in the first three periods and increased in the last two, during which the highest weight gains of the animals. Four daily hours grazing period ensured intake close to maintenance level.

-The experiment was carried out with sheep during the finishing phase in a partial confinement system to evaluate the following physiological parameters: rectal temperature (RT), respiratory rate (RR), heart rate (HR), productive performance and carcass characteristics. Fourteen uncastrated sheep with an average initial age of 90 days belonging to two genetic groups were used. There were seven Santa Inês animals, whose average initial live weight (ILW) was 23.65 kg, and seven F1 Dorper × St. Inês animals, with an ILW of 20.02 kg. The treatments were the two genetic groups and two times for the collection of the physiological parameters, at 09.00 h and 15.00 h. Evaluation took place once a week, in a shared stall, always following a 20-min grazing activity. The animals had daily access to a Megathyrsus maximus (Jacquin) pasture, cultivar Masai, from 08.00 h to 17.00 h and their feed was placed in a trough, at a forage:concentrate ratio of 51:49 in the total dry matter. The concentrate consisted of 900 g/kg of ground corn and 100 g/kg of soybean meal, and the roughage supplied was alfalfa hay. There was no interaction between treatments for the studied variables. The physiological parameters were affected only by the time of day. The variables RR and RT were higher at 15.00 h, while the highest HR values were observed at 09.00 h. Neither of the two genetic groups differed for performance and carcass characteristics. Hair sheep belonging to close genetic groups show no differences in performance, carcass characteristics and physiological responses when subjected to heat stress.

RESUMO -Avaliaram-se as características de carcaça de bovinos machos não-castrados de três grupos genéticos submetidos a dois planos de alimentação, em confinamento. Utilizaram-se 56 bovinos com idade média de 18 meses. Doze animais foram abatidos no início do experimento e os demais (16 Nelore selecionados, 12 Nelore não-selecionados e 16 Caracu selecionados, com peso vivo médio inicial de 404, 345 e 434 kg, respectivamente), distribuídos em delineamento inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial 2 x 3, composto por dois níveis de alimentação (restrição alimentar: fornecimento de 65 g de MS/kgPV 0,75 por dia e ad libitum: oferta do alimento duas vezes ao dia) e três grupos genéticos. A dieta foi formulada com silagem de milho como volumoso e apresentou relação volumoso:concentrado 50:50. O abate foi realizado quando os animais atingiram 4 mm de gordura subcutânea, medida por ultra-som. Observou-se efeito da interação nível de alimentação x grupo genético somente sobre a porcentagem de tecido ósseo. O peso e a profundidade da carcaça e os pesos dos cortes dianteiro e traseiro não diferiram entre os grupos selecionados e foram superiores aos dos animais Nelore não-selecionados. O plano ad libitum proporcionou maior rendimento do traseiro. O rendimento de carcaça não sofreu influência da alimentação e, juntamente com a porcentagem do traseiro, foram maiores para os zebuínos. RESUMO -Foram avaliados os sistemas VIÇOSA, CNCPS e NRC para formulação de dietas, utilizando-se 22 bovinos (oito Nelore, oito Caracu selecionados e seis Nelore não-selecionados) confinados com média de 18 meses de idade e peso vivo inicial médio de 404 kg, para Nelore selecionado, 345 kg, para Nelore não-selecionado, e 434 kg, para Caracu. A dieta apresentou relação volumoso:concentrado de 50:50, contendo silagem de milho como volumoso. O critério de abate foi determinado pela medida de ultra-som quando os animais atingiam 4 mm de espessura de gordura subcutânea. Utilizou-se o teste T de Student, comparando-se as médias observadas dos grupos genéticos para os consumos de matéria seca (CMS) e ganhos médios diários (GMD) e aquelas preditas pelos sistemas VIÇOSA, CNCPS e NRC. O sistema VIÇOSA apresentou boas estimativas para os GMD de animais Nelore selecionados e não-selecionados, mas os valores diferiram do observado para a raça Caracu. Não houve boa estimativa para CMS de nenhum grupo genético, com o uso do sistema VIÇOSA. O CNCPS, níveis 1 e 2, foi eficiente para as estimativas dos CMS dos três tipos genéticos, sendo que os GMD diferiram estatisticamente do observado tanto no nível 1 quanto no 2, pois os valores foram subestimados. The animals were confined with average live weight of 404 kg to genetic improved Nellore, 345 kg to non-improved Nellore and 434 kg to genetic improved Caracu breed, all with 18 months of age. The forage used was corn silage in forage to concentrate ratio of 50:50 in the diet. The slaughter criterion was determined by ultra-sound and it was executed when the animals reached an average of four millimeters of subcutaneous fat. The Student t test was used to compare the dry matter intake (DMI) and average daily gain (ADG) observed in the genetic groups and those predicted by the VIÇOSA, CNCPS and NRC systems. The VIÇOSA system showed a good estimate for ADG of the animals of genetic improved Nellore and non-improved Nellore breed, but the values were different of observed to improved Caracu. The VIÇOSA system does not have a good estimate for DMI for none of the three genetic groups. The CNCPS system, level 1 and 2 was efficient to estimate the DMI of the three genetic groups; however the estimative for ADG differed from the observed for both level 1 and level 2 of the system and the values were underestimated. RESUMO -Avaliou-se o desempenho de 56 bovinos machos não-castrados de três grupos genéticos, com idade média de 18 meses, submetidos à alimentação à vontade ou restrita, em confinamento. Doze animais foram abatidos no início do experimento e os demais (16 Nelore selecionados, 12 Nelore não-selecionados e 16 Caracu selecionados com peso vivo médio inicial de 404, 345 e 434 kg, respectivamente) foram distribuídos em delineamento inteiramente casualizado, em esquema fatorial 2 x 3, composto por dois níveis de alimentação (restrito = consumo de 65 g de MS/kgPV 0,75 por dia e ad libitum = fornecimento do alimento duas vezes ao dia) e três grupos genéticos. O volumoso utilizado foi a silagem de milho e o concentrado foi constituído de milho moído, farelo de algodão, uréia, monensina e mistura mineral, com relação volumoso:concentrado 50:50. O abate foi realizado quando cada animal atingiu 4 mm gordura subcutânea à altura da 12 a costela, avaliada por ultra-som. Os grupos genéticos apresentaram ganhos médios diários de peso vivo e pesos de corpo vazio e de carcaça semelhantes, não havendo interação grupo genético × nível de alimentação. Os ganhos de peso vivo e os pesos de corpo vazio e de carcaça foram maiores nos animais alimentados ad libitum. Somente os consumos de matéria seca em kg/dia sofreram influência tanto do nível de alimentação quanto do grupo genético. Os animais Caracu apresentaram os maiores consumos, seguidos pelos Nelore selecionados.
