The habit of cigarette smoking is associated with higher oral candidal carriage and possible predisposition to oral candidosis. The effects of exposure to smoke on the virulence properties of oral yeasts remain obscure. Hence, we showed in vitro the effect of cigarette smoke condensate (CSC) on ten clinical isolates of Candida albicans obtained from nonsmoking volunteers, as well the type-strain CBS562. CSC was generated by complete burn of five commercial cigarettes in an in-house smoking machine and used to prepare the culture broth in which the strains were grown. In 24-h intervals (T(24), T(48), and T(72)), the cells were harvested, washed, subcultured, and the resultant growth were evaluated for possible variations for secreted aspartyl protease, phospholipase, chondroitinase, and hemolysins, adhesion to acrylic and cell surface hydrophobicity (CSH). The results indicated a temporal increase in the secretion rates of enzymes, particularly when yeast cells were exposed to CSC for 48-72 h (P < 0.05). Similarly, adhesion to acrylic and CSH increased with exposure period (P < 0.05). Based on foregoing, we concluded that CSC may promote significant enhance in the secretion of candidal histolytic enzymes and adherence to denture surfaces, thereby promoting oral yeast carriage and possible infection.
Lymphoepithelial cyst of the oral cavity is a rare cystic lesion that presents as an asymptomatic, well-circumscribed, yellowish small submucosal nodule covered by normal overlying mucosa, usually located in the floor of the mouth or in the ventral or posterolateral surface of the tongue. Histopathological examination reveals a cyst lined by a stratified squamous epithelium surrounded by lymphoid tissue. In this paper, we report two cases of oral lymphoepithelial cyst, one on the anterior floor of the mouth and another on the posterior lateral tongue. In both cases, the patients were women aged approximately 50 years and the lesions were treated by local surgical excision, with no evidence of recurrence after 2 years of follow-up.
Aim:The aim of this case report is to demonstrate the efficacy of the combination of two techniques of dental bleaching (inside and outside) to deal with the aesthetics of the smile.
Material and methods:The intra-bucal examination showed the presence of a fistula in the vestibular region of the tooth 11 and a darkening of the tooth crown. It was performed root canal treatment and after completion, the process of internal bleaching using sodium perborate with hydrogen peroxide 20% ("walking bleach" technique) was applied. External dental bleaching as a complement of the tooth 11 was performed to correct a persisted color change after the completion of internal bleaching. After the bleaching procedure, neutral fluoride was applied for 60 seconds and the surface of the enamel was polished.
Conclusion:It was concluded that through the combination of the techniques of dental bleaching is possible to solve the unsightly problem of a non-vital darkened tooth and also achieve the result desired by the patient.
This report describes a case of recurrence of chronic paracoccidioidomycosis 10 years following the initial diagnosis. A 56-year-old female was admitted to the Dental Clinic of the Pontifical Catholic University of Paraná complaining of oral soreness. Mulberry-like ulcerations were observed on the gingiva, right labial comissura, and vermillion of the lip. The patient reported persistent chronic cough, weight loss, appetite loss and fever. The anamnesis revealed that the patient had developed and been treated for paracoccidioidomycosis 10 years earlier. A biopsy was performed and microscopic examination revealed microabscesses, collections of macrophages organized into granulomas, multinucleated giant cells and Paracoccidioides brasiliensis. The patient was treated with Itraconazole and, the oral lesions disappeared within 3 months. Persistent follow-up examination in patients with a history of paracoccidioidomycosis is essential in the management of this disease.
