Este artigo objetiva compreender como a utilização sistematizada dos quadrinhos do Universo Macanudo pode contribuir com a formação do leitor crítico. A proposta envolveu a parceria entre duas professoras de Língua Portuguesa e seis alunos do 9º ano do Ensino Fundamental de uma escola de Cachoeiro de Itapemirim/ES, os quais constituíram um grupo de estudo que se reuniu para participar de oficinas para análise e leitura de quadrinhos. Envolveu também alunos de seis turmas de 9º ano da sala de aula regular, que também realizaram as atividades, e professores de Língua Portuguesa do referido município, que analisaram o material em uma formação de professores. A metodologia utilizada foi a pesquisa colaborativa, pois contou com a participação dos envolvidos para avaliar e repensar as propostas realizadas. As atividades foram desenvolvidas a partir dos estudos de Vigotski sobre a importância da mediação do professor e dos momentos pedagógicos de Saviani. O referencial relativo à formação crítica do leitor dialoga com os conceitos bakhtinianos de linguagem, dialogismo e responsividade. A pesquisa parte do pressuposto de que quadrinhos tendem a contribuir com a formação leitora dos alunos, por serem atrativos e por explorarem jogos de linguagem capazes de aprofundar a leitura e aguçar o espírito crítico. O estudo conclui que os quadrinhos podem formar leitores críticos, desde que haja adequação temática e formal em seu uso.
