Interest is growing in finding natural sources of effective antitumor agents that generate fewer side effects than conventional chemotherapeutic drugs. Avenanthramides (Avns) are such compounds; these phenolic molecules naturally occur in oats and have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antiproliferative effects making them worthy of further research. The aim of this study is to characterise Avns' curative ability and antineoplastic activity on solid-form Ehrlich tumors. For the study, 75 female mice were randomly and equally allocated to five groups (group 1-control, group 2-DMSO, group 3-positive control receiving Avns, group 4-mice with Ehrlich solid tumor, and group 5-Ehrlich solid tumor treated with Avns). Mice with Ehrlich solid tumors exhibit increased tumor volume; elevated expression of AFP, ALT, AST, Bcl2, CEA, cholesterol, creatinine, urea, MDA, PCNA, potassium, triglycerides, TNF-α, and NF-κB; and a concomitant decline in catalase, GSH, P53, and SOD. In the mice with Ehrlich tumors who received Avns, there appeared to be improvement in NF-κB TNF-α, tumor markers (AFP and CEA), electrolytes, liver and kidney function enzymes, and lipid profiles; reduced MDA level; improved antioxidant parameters; normalised liver protein, P53, and PCNA; and reduced Bcl2 expression. Pathological examination of tumor lesions also indicated improvement. These results suggest that Avns exhibit antineoplastic activity and possess antioxidant properties that enhance the antioxidant defence system, thus reducing the oxidative stress caused by Ehrlich solid tumors.

The current study demonstrated that allicin effectively mitigates cardiac oxidative damage, apoptosis and inflammation, induced by acute DOX intoxication. Therefore, allicin could be a promising cytoprotective agent against DOX cardiotoxicity.

Aim:The main objectives of this study were to determine the incidence of Sarcocystis sp. infection in cattle and buffalo carcasses slaughtered at El-Kharga abattoir, New Valley Governorate, Egypt.Materials and Methods:The slaughtered animals were daily inspected for Sarcocystis macrocysts through a year (2015). Macroscopic Sarcocystis was detected from a total of 2120 cattle and buffalo carcasses. In addition, 100 meat samples were collected from female cattle and buffalo (50 each) and were examined microscopically for sarcocystosis.Results:The overall incidence of Sarcocystis macrocyst among bovine carcasses was 159/2120 (7.5%). Total incidence in cattle was 149/2000 (7.45%), whereas it was 10/120 (8.33%) in buffalo carcasses. Concerning gender, the overall prevalence of Sarcocystis infection was 127/1790 (7.09%) in male and 32/330 (9.69%) in females bovine carcasses. The highest detection rate of Sarcocystis lesions was from the esophagus (76.3%) followed by throat muscles (35.3%), tongue (33.8%), and diaphragm muscles (18.71%). Macrocysts from cattle were identified to Sarcocystis hirsuta, whereas Sarcocystis fusiformis was identified from buffalo carcasses. By microscopic examination, 18 (36%) of 50 female cattle carcasses harbor Sarcocystis sp., whereas 11 (22%) of buffalo carcasses were harbored Sarcocystis microcysts.Conclusion:A high incidence of Sarcocystis infection was detected among slaughtered bovines in El-Kharga abattoir, Egypt. Sarcocystis macrocysts were a higher incidence in female elder animals macrocysts were identified to S. hirsuta in cattle and S. fusiformis in buffaloes. Sarcocystosis constitute a major cause of economic losses at El-Kharga abattoir. Beef meat may carry health risks to consumers.

The aim of this work is to investigate penetration enhancers in proniosomes as a transdermal delivery system for nisoldipine. This was performed with the goal of optimising the composition of proniosomes as transdermal drug delivery systems. Plain proniosomes comprising sorbitan monostearate, cholesterol, ethanol and a small quantity of water were initially prepared. Subsequently, proniosomes containing lecithin or skin penetration enhancers were prepared and evaluated for transdermal delivery of nisoldipine. The plain proniosomes significantly enhanced the transdermal flux of nisoldipine to reach 12.18 μg cm(-2) h(-1) compared with a saturated aqueous drug solution which delivered the drug at a rate of 0.46 μg cm(-2) h(-1). Incorporation of lecithin into such proniosomes increased the drug flux to reach a value of 28.51 μg cm(-2) h(-1). This increase can be attributed to the penetration enhancing effect of lecithin fatty acid components. Replacing lecithin oleic acid (OA) produced proniosomes of comparable efficacy to the lecithin containing system. The transdermal drug flux increased further after incorporation of propylene glycol into the OA based proniosomes. Similarly, incorporation of isopropyl myristate into plain proniosomes increased drug flux. The study introduced enhanced proniosomes as a promising transdermal delivery carrier and highlighted the role of penetration enhancing mechanisms in enhanced proniosomal skin delivery. The study opened the way for another line of optimisation of niosome proconcentrates.

Environmental xenoestrogen contaminant bisphenol A (BPA), widely used as a monomer in the manufacture of epoxy, polycarbonate plastics and polystyrene resins. However, exposure to BPA has raised concerns, and the negative impacts of its exposure on reproduction have been controversial. The purpose of this work was directed to assess the potential adverse effects of BPA on dam rats and their first generation females in a comparative toxicological study. Fifteen pregnant female rats were classified into three equal groups; first group was orally administered corn oil and served as control (group1), second and third groups were orally administered BPA at dose levels of 50 and 200 mg/kg b.wt respectively (groups 2 & 3). The administration was carried out daily from zero day through the gestation period (21 days) until the last day of the lactation period (21days) and was extended after weaning for three months, in which female off springs of first generation (F1) of the three groups of dams were classified into; F1control group (group 4), F1 group treated with low dose of BPA (group 5) and F1 group treated with high dose of BPA (group 6) which continued in daily oral administration of BPA at the same previously mentioned doses for three months. The results elucidated a clear marked DNA fragmentation in the ovary of both dam and F1 female groups especially at higher examined concentration. Also, the data demonstrated a significant increase in the serum levels of GGT, ALP, glucose, total cholesterol, triglycerides, LDH and also in the serum level of estrogen hormone. Meanwhile, our study recorded a significant decrease in total protein, catalase, GST, HDL and FSH hormone in both treated dam and F1 female groups which was more significantly decreased in F1 female rats. Moreover, our experiment illustrated up-regulation in the immunoexpression of ERβ in ovary, uterus and liver of dam and F1 female groups. The histopathological investigation showed degeneration in the epithelial lining of ovarian follicles, submucosal leukocytic infiltration and increase in vaculation of hepatic cells with proliferation of kupffer cells. The lesions were more sever in groups 3 & 6 of both dam and their F1 females. Our data speculated that long- term exposure to BPA at 50 and 200 mg/kg.b.wt. depicted total genomic damage, significant alterations in liver enzymes, lipid profile, antioxidant enzymes and reproductive hormones with up-regulation in the expression of ERβ which were more significantly perturbed in group 3 and group 6 of both dam and F1 female rats.
