Introdução: A assistência pré-natal compõe um importante braço da atenção à saúde e também elo entre a equipe de saúde e as gestantes. Ela se dá através de práticas, rotineiramente sistematizadas, de prevenção e promoção de saúde para melhor desfecho perinatal. Objetivos: O objetivo desse estudo é revisar o acompanhamento do pré natal em gestantes de risco habitual e alto risco, levando em conta os exames necessários e as mudanças esperadas em cada período da gestação. Métodos: Os bancos de dados Pubmed, Diretrizes e protocolos hospitalares foram pesquisados eletronicamente utilizando os descritores pré-natal, assistência pré natal e gestação de risco habitual nos idiomas inglês e português. Discussão e Conclusão: Não há duvida sobre a necessidade de redução das mortalidades materna e infantil como indicador de qualidade da assistência à saúde de mulheres e crianças. Dessa forma, uma assistência pré-natal humana e de qualidade, minimiza danos pré e perinatais, tanto em aspectos sociais, quanto econômicos.
