El enfoque de capacidades dinámicas, constituye una alternativa de análisis dentro del área disciplinar de la gestión estratégica. La revisión de autores seminales permite exponer sus componentes y contextos de aplicación. Este enfoque permite plantear un marco teórico ordenado para ser aplicado en entornos de alta volatilidad como los actuales. Las empresas generan capacidades que les permiten responder rápidamente ante los requerimientos del mercado, adecuarse a los cambios tecnológicos y operar en un futuro impredecible. Cuando las organizaciones desarrollan capacidades dinámicas, adaptan y reconfiguran los recursos y capacidades, para atender las exigencias del entorno.
La década del cincuenta se caracteriza por un fuerte crecimiento económico de la economía norteaméricana, es la época del babyboom, de la producción en masa. Durante este período se conoce el desarrollo de teorías y perspectivas que dan cuenta tanto del aspecto formal como humano de las organizaciones. Ello a pesar del auge e influencia de las teorías que marcan este período, en particular las teorías de la decisión y la escuela de los sistemas sociales con sus diferentes enfoques. Mencionemos, entre otros, la existencia de trabajos en administración de Mayo (1937), Bamard (1938), Simon (1945), Drucker (1954), Selznick (1957). En la Universidad de California, en el instituto de relaciones industriales. Melville Dalton trabajaba como "un investigador marginal", buscando las relaciones entre las teorías administrativas con la práctica cotidiana de los dirigentes.
Se presenta una perspectiva de comparación entre los métodos cualitativos y cuantitativos tradicionales de la investigación y las potencialidades del nuevo paradigma del modelamiento y simulación para la investigación en ciencias sociales, sus diferentes métodos y herramientas. Se revisan los criterios de la simulación dinámica, de los autómatas celulares y los agentes y se esbozan las concepciones provenientes de la inteligencia artificial como la vida artificial, las sociedades artificiales y la cultura artificial, que conducen hacia una ciencia social computacional explicativa. El estudio se centra en el Modelamiento y Simulación Basado en Agentes (ABMS), como el dispositivo por excelencia que permite la comprensión y explicación de los fenómenos sociales, su emergencia, evolución y adaptación más que la predicción típica de los demás tipos de simulación. La metodología de los modelos ABMS se posiciona como laboratorio para modificar las condiciones de simulación de los fenómenos reales, y permite construir sociedades artificiales en donde es posible realizar experimentos impedidos por la moral, la ética y/o los costos en la vida real.
