Abstract Currently, chemical origins coagulants are used in water purification processes; however, it has been shown through different studies that they have a detrimental effect on the health of humans. The objective of this research is to evaluate the efficiency of seed extract of tamarind as a natural coagulant in water treatment process. A jar test was used in order to simulate the coagulation, flocculation and sedimentation processes. A synthetic turbid water using kaolin in tap water was prepared. The parameters turbidity, pH, color, alkalinity and total solids were measured before and after the application of natural coagulant at different doses (25; 50; 100; 250 and 500 mg/L) in solutions with different initial turbidity (10, 15, 25, 50, 75, 100 and 200 NTU). The use of Tamarindus indica seeds without fat and oils in water of 200 TNU allowed to obtain turbidity residuals values lower than those established by the Venezuelan sanitary norms of water quality (5 NTU) with average removal percentages of 97.6%. However, in waters of medium (50-75 TNU) and low turbidity (15 NTU), the treated waters presented values above the established limit. With respect to color, total solids, total alkalinity and pH, the values after the treatment were 10 CU Pt-CO, 150 mg/L, 75 mg CaCO3/L and 6.79, respectively, so the tamarind seed can be used as a coagulant in water purification. Key words: coagulant, water treatment, Tamarindus indica, kaolin, aluminum sulfate.
Aluminum sulfate is one of the chemical coagulants most used in the process of water purification for human consumption. However, it is considered a threat to human health, because these ions are associated with diseases of the nervous system, which has led to the study of natural coagulants as a coagulant alternative. The present work has the purpose of evaluating the effectiveness of the extract of the mango seeds in the process of water purification of several levels of initial turbidity. The jar test was used to simulate the coagulation, flocculation and sedimentation process, and to determine the effectiveness of a coagulant solution prepared with the mango seed extract, and to compare it with that of the chemical coagulant. Synthetic turbid water (5000 mg / l) was prepared using kaolin in tap water and parameters were measured: turbidity, ph, color, total alkalinity, total solids, before and after the application of different doses of seed preparation 10
Abstract Industrial effluents cause serious environmental impacts, proper treatment and subsequent reuse for multiple uses contributes to sustainable water consumption, which is why it is necessary to apply treatments to improve the conditions of the effluent. The effectiveness of bentonite (BT) as a clarifying agent was evaluated and compared with chemical coagulants: aluminum sulfate (AS) and ferric chloride (FC) by a physicochemical treatment of coagulation-flocculation in effluents of a food industrial complex. This study was carried out using wastewater from a manufacturing industrial complex of wheat flour and pastas. Wastewater characterization was performed by measuring the parameters: biochemical oxygen demand (BOD5,20), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total alkalinity, total solids (TS), total suspended solids (TSS), settleable solids (SS), true colour, pH and turbidity. The treatments were carried out by conducting exploratory runs with doses of coagulants ranging between 0 and 300 mg/L. The experiment was conducted by using a completely randomized design with a total of three treatments (SA, CF y BT) and the jar test equipment, which reproduces the treatment plant conditions. Optimal doses obtained for the clarifying agents were 260, 200, and 40 mg/L, for a removal of 98, 90, and 98% for colour and 92, 93, and 97% for turbidity, respectively. There were significant differences between the treatments performed, being the wet bentonite the one that produced the highest elimination percentages. The effluent quality obtained from the treatments fulfilled the Venezuelan standards for discharge in water bodies. Keywords: physicochemical treatment, coagulation, industrial wastewater, effluent, bentonite, ferric chloride, aluminum sulfate.
