Hybrid-flow batteries are a suitable storage technology for "green" electricity generated by renewable sources such as wind power and solar energy. Redox-active organic compounds have recently been investigated to improve the traditional metal-and halogen-based technologies. Here we report the utilization of a 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-N-oxyl (TEMPO) derivative that is in particular designed for application in semiorganic zinc hybrid-flow batteries. The TEMPO derivative is synthesized and electrochemically characterized via cyclic voltammetry and rotating disc electrode measurements. This derivative features a high solubility in aqueous electrolytes; thus, volumetric capacities above 20 Ah L −1 are achieved. The fabricated hybrid-flow batteries feature over 1100 consecutive charge−discharge cycles at constant capacity retention, and current densities up to 80 mA cm −2 are applied.

Microwave-assisted synthesis and processing represents a growing field in materials research and successfully entered the field of carbon nanomaterials during the last decade. Due to the strong interaction of carbon materials with microwave radiation, fast heating rates and localized heating can be achieved. These features enable the acceleration of reaction processes, as well as the formation of nanostructures with special morphologies. A comprehensive overview is provided here on the possibilities and achievements in the field of carbon-nanomaterial research when using microwave-based heating approaches. This includes the synthesis and processing of carbon nanotubes and fibers, graphene materials, carbon nanoparticles, and capsules, as well as porous carbon materials. Additionally, the principles of microwave-heating, in particular of carbon materials, are introduced and important issues, i.e., safety and reproducibility, are discussed.

A novel redox-active polymer based on a 9,10-di(1,3-dithiol-2-ylidene)-9,10-dihydroanthracene (exTTF) system in combination with a conjugated backbone was synthesized via rhodium (Rh)-catalyzed polymerization of 2-ethynyl(exTTF), leading to polymers with low polydispersities. Composite electrodes containing this polymer exhibited chemically reversible two-electron oxidation in aqueous media. The application of these electrodes as active cathode materials in hybrid zinc-organic batteries using an aqueous electrolyte enabled the production of air-stable charge storage systems with a theoretical capacity of 133 mAh g − 1. These batteries featured high performance, charge/discharge rates of up to 120 C (30 s) and an ultra-long lifetime, of over 10 000 charge/discharge cycles (accompanied by a minor capacity loss of 14%). Finally, the polymer was compared with its nonconjugated derivative, revealing the positive influence of the conjugated backbone on the material activity owing to improved electron transfer within the polymer chain.

It is known that organic species regulate fabrication of hierarchical biological forms via solution methods. However, in this study, we observed that the presence of inorganic ions plays an important role in the formation and regulation of biological spherical hydroxyapatite formation. We present a mineralization method to prepare ion-doped hydroxyapatite spheres with a hierarchical structure that is free of organic surfactants and biological additives. Porous and hollow strontium-doped hydroxyapatite spheres were synthesized via controlling the concentration of strontium ions in a calcium and phosphate buffer solution. Similarly, fluoride and silicon-doped hydroxyapatite spheres were synthesized. While spherical particle formation was attainable at low and high temperature for Sr-doped hydroxyapatite, it was only possible at high temperature in the F/Si-doped system. The presence of inorganic ions not only plays an important role in the formation and regulation of biological spherical hydroxyapatite, but also could introduce pharmaceutical effects as a result of trace element release. Such ion release results showed a sustained release with pH responsive behavior, and significantly influenced the hydroxyapatite re-precipitation. These ion-doped hydroxyapatite spheres with hollow and porous structure could have promising applications as bone/tooth materials, drug delivery systems, and chromatography supports.

The synthesis and self-assembly of organometallic poly(ferrocenyldimethylsilane)-block-poly(2-alkyl-2-oxazoline) (PFDMS-b-POx) diblock copolymers of different weight fractions in the bulk and in solution is investigated.

Carbon nanofibers (CNFs) were synthesized on silicon wafers and graphite microfibers and the influence of the microwave parameters, i.e., irradiation power, and time as well as the amount of applied catalyst, was investigated.

Carbon nanofibrous (CNF) films are of great interest for various applications, e.g., as substrates for electrodes, sensors, or catalysts. Here, a fast microwave‐assisted synthesis is reported to fabricate square‐centimeter large free‐standing carbon nanofibrous films of approximately 10 μm thickness utilizing nickel‐based catalysts and ethanol as carbon source. The obtained CNF coatings exhibit a good stability and partial self‐delamination from the substrate is observed, which enables their easy detachment from the substrate without the need for further treatment. Scanning electron microscopy is applied to investigate the morphology of the films and to develop a growth model.
