Reconhecendo o foco do ensino de Língua Portuguesa no texto como ponto de partida e chegada (BRASIL, 1998), discutimos nesse artigo a inserção da leitura crítica do gênero tirinha, a partir de uma intervenção pedagógica realizada como parte das ações/pesquisas do PROFLETRAS. Nesse contexto, a temática foi fundamental pois a intolerância religiosa também está na ordem do dia na sociedade brasileira e a escola não pode se furtar a refletir sobre questões tão caras à formação cidadã. Posto isso, a reflexão aqui proposta se baseia nos postulados do texto (Antunes (2010); Cavalcante (2017); Costa Val (1999); Kleiman (2006); Marcuschi (2008); Silva (2018)), bem como do discurso na perspectiva da análise crítica, mais especificamente no que concerne à interdiscursividade (Fairclough, 2001; Resende e Ramalho, 2013). No que se refere à importância do gênero tirinha para o desenvolvimento deste trabalho, recorremos às contribuições de Mendonça (2002) e Santaella (2012). Além disso, alguns autores contribuíram para nossa compreensão acerca da temática da intolerância religiosa, bem como do uso do humor para dar sutileza no trato com a temática (Bourdieu (2007); Cirne (1982); Eco (1998); Magalhães (2010); Ramos (2017); Silva (2011)). A pesquisa apresentada nesse trabalho, mostra que desenvolver práticas de leitura que priorizem o pensar sobre temáticas de relevância social é imprescindível para a minimização de preconceitos.
