Previous studies have reported a relationship between being a victim of bullying, but no studies have been carried out with Mexican students; notwithstanding the high scores of bullying in Mexico in international rankings. The objective of this study was to analyze the association between being a victim of bullying and lower HRQoL among schoolchildren and adolescents in Mexico. This cross-sectional and correlational study involved 2225 students from 22 elementary, middle and high schools. HRQoL was assessed with the KIDSCREEN-10 questionnaire and bullying with the social adaptation dimension of KIDSCREEN-52. Bivariate associations were evaluated, and a multivariate logistic regression was utilized. The prevalence of victims of bullying was 17.3%. Being a victim of bullying was double the risk of having a lower HRQoL than not being a victim after adjusting for health perception, gender and age, OR 2.3 (1.7-3.1). As the Wilson and Cleary Model of Quality of Life explains, individual characteristics, such as, being a victim of bullying are associated with quality of life. Similar findings in the existing literature imply that bullying is a global phenomenon that impacts the victimized child or adolescent's life in different ways.
The objective of this study was to test the psychometric properties of the QUALEFFO-41, an osteoporosis-specific health-related quality of life (HRQoL) measure, in a population sample. The study involved repeated administration of QUALEFFO-41 and another measure of HRQoL, the SF-36, to a stratified random population sample to test reliability and validity of instrument. The study was set in urban Harrow, Middlesex, UK and rural Cambridgeshire, UK. The participants were 83 males and 88 females aged 65-80+ years. Of the 230 individuals contacted 76.5% participated. The test-retest reliability of most QUALEFFO-41 items was good (Kappa 0.59-0.91) but two items had lower repeatability. Internal consistency was also generally good, but suggestive of some redundancy for three domains. The QUALEFFO-41 domains in general correlated well with SF-36 domains (r = 0.57 to r = 0.87), suggesting good validity. The QUALEFFO-41 has been shown to be a reliable and valid disease-specific HRQoL measure for osteoporosis. In population samples, it can be administered by post, or with a professional available to answer queries. Some specific items perform less well than may be desired and there is evidence of some redundancy, but further investigation is required and there are not yet grounds for textual change. We recommend continued use of this well-validated, reliable instrument.
Objective. To assess STI/AIDS risk behaviors and occupational risk factors among adolescent hotel workers in Puerto Vallarta. Material and Methods. Comparative cross-sectional study conducted in 1998, among 288 workers adolescents of 38 hotels in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. Variables were collected on working conditions, environmental conditions, STI/AIDS risk behaviors, and sociodemographic characteristics. Statistical analysis consisted of descriptive and multivariate techniques: t test, OR, and logistic regression. Results. Study subjects had a mean age of 17.7 years; 71.5% were males. Fifty-three percent had active sexual relations; 93.6% of them had one or more STI/AIDS risk behaviors. Inadequate condom use was found in 77.3%, and 41% drank alcoholic beverages before intercourse. Promiscuity was reported by 29.9%, and anal relations by 9.2%. Associated factors were: perception of a sexually-arousing environment (OR 2.36), alcohol drinking by peers (OR 2.52) and guests (OR 2.60) before sexual intercourse, hotel rules allowing tourist guests in hotel rooms (OR 4.46). Confouding variables were: male gender (OR 3.14), being married or Rasmussen-Cruz B, Hidalgo-San Martín A, Alfaro-Alfaro N. Comportamientos de riesgo de ITS/SIDA en adolescentes trabajadores de hoteles de Puerto Vallarta y su asociación con el ambiente laboral.
