Young women in a socioeconomic situation of vulnerability, with low schooling and multiparous represent the majority of HIV-positive pregnant women attended at the service. Evaluations performed during the prenatal period were relevant for the diagnosis of infection in most cases. An early diagnosis associated with proper clinical, obstetrical and psychological monitoring and with nursing care is important to provide appropriate treatment compliance and a reduction of the rates of vertical transmission.
The current study addresses the need to empirically develop effective mental health interventions for youth from ethnic/racial minority and low-income neighborhoods. Using Stage Model evaluation methods supported by the National Institutes of Health in the US to address underutilization of mental healthcare among racial/ethnic minority youth, this feasibility study demonstrates empirical adaptation of an innovative sport-specific psychological intervention for use in youth from ethnic/racial minority and low-income neighborhoods. An international group of professionals familiar with sport performance and mental health intervention serving the target population experientially examined the adapted intervention protocols in workshops and provided feedback. Survey results indicated the professionals found the intervention components were easy to administer and likely to be safe, enjoyable, engaging and efficacious for youth mental health and sport performance. The protocols were revised based on feedback from these professionals and the intervention was examined in a case trial involving an Asian American youth who evidenced Social Anxiety Disorder. Case study results indicated the intervention could be implemented with integrity, and severity of psychiatric symptoms and factors interfering with sport performance decreased after intervention implementation. The participant’s relationships with family, coaches and teammates were also improved.
Featuring the demand in Primary Health Care (PHC) units is essential to properly perform healthrelated diagnosis. In addition, it is an important pedagogical tool used to teach about the real population health needs. This is a cross-sectional study-with random sample-about the care provided by medical students in Southern Brazil, during their Mandatory Internship (MI) period. There was predominance of care given to female patients; 70% were adult or elderly individuals. The Systemic Arterial Hypertension (SAH) was the most diagnosed disease and it was followed by Upper Airway Diseases and by Musculoskeletal Pain. Laboratory tests were requested in less than 20% of the cases and imaging tests were requested in less than 7% of them. The patients were referred to other health care levels in 25% of the cases. The current study helped featuring the epidemiological profile of users in Primary Health Care (PHC) units wherein medical residents of the Federal University of Santa Maria (UFSM-Universidade Federal de Santa Maria) realized their final course activities. Thus, the results of such featuring may help redirecting the didactic and pedagogical activities, which are required to enable a medical training focused on the population health needs.
