Este artigo apresenta a experiência pedagógica de Cremilda Medina, jornalista, pesquisadora e professora titular sênior da Universidade de São Paulo (USP). Nas etapas de mais de cinco décadas, resumem-se aqui diferentes momentos da mediação social dialógica, eixo central de sua proposta pedagógica, fixado em 19 livros de autoria da pesquisadora e mais de 50 coletâneas por ela organizadas. O estudo reflexivo qualitativo combina metodologias que se complementam como o estudo de caso, pesquisa histórica documental, bibliográfica, entrevistas e observação-experiência. Entre as possibilidades afetivas da docência praticada por Cremilda Medina destaca-se o conceito de ensino-aprendizagem caracterizado pela ação, e não pela verbalização de conhecimentos.
O artigo define conceitos para o jornalismo e esclarece o que é etnografia, apontando semelhanças, diferenças e alguns equívocos recorrentes nos estudos de jornalismo que adotam a abordagem antropológica. Nas pesquisas que mantêm um diálogo com a antropologia, “observação participante”, “trabalho de campo” e “etnografia” aparecem como práticas sinônimas. Empregada frequentemente de forma instrumentalizada, etnografia é definida recorrentemente nessas pesquisas como uma “descrição densa” e confundida com a ideia de descritivismo. O artigo parte da premissa de que o jornalismo não se define por uma técnica, mas por uma ética e que a etnografia, definida como método, é o resultado de processos de observação e seleção, associada a um esforço intelectual para compreensão de contextos e arranjos sociais. Diferentemente do jornalismo, no qual os acontecimentos são noticiados e comentados, na antropologia, os fatos etnográficos não existem.

Umas empenham-se em taquigrafar história, geografia, economia, política, demografia; outras, a dinâmica sociocultural e psicossocial; e há as que se debruçam sobre as criações artísticas, compreendendo a literatura e as artes plásticas; sem esquecer a música, que também participa dessa metanarrativa. Todas, em diferentes gradações e entonações, contribuem para o entendimento de como a nação se pensa e repensa, buscando constituir-se, explicar-se e imaginar-se.
