Surface topography plays a significant role in functional
performance situations like friction, lubrication and wear. A
European Community funded research programme on areal
characterization of steel sheet has recently assisted research in
this area. This article is dedicated to the software that supported
most of the programme. Born as a rudimentary collection of
procedures, it grew steadily to become an integrated package,
later equipped with a graphical interface and circulated to the
research community employing the Open-Source
philosophy.
Surface topography is well known to affect functional behaviour of engineering surfaces. In particular in Automotive Industry, the micro-geometric propertiess of the panel surface will influence the forming and painting performance of the autobody panel. In response to this there has been an increasing emphasis on the three-dimensional nature of surfaces in terms of new characterisation techniques and new deterministic surfaces (as opposed to traditionally stochastic), which enable better process control. An innovative technique based on the Gram-Schmidt decomposition is introduced to jZter Electron-BeamTextured (EBr) deterministic surfaces. It is shown that this technique can be very effective in separating the deterministic pattern and obtain a noise-free reconstructed surface.
scite is a Brooklyn-based organization that helps researchers better discover and understand research articles through Smart Citations –citations that display the context of the citation and describe whether the article provides supporting or contrasting evidence. scite is used by students and researchers from around the world and is funded in part by the National Science Foundation and the National Institute on Drug Abuse of the National Institutes of Health.
